She wasn't supposed to be that old. Alicorns are normally given an extra fifty years or so to their lifespan upon transformation. But after the Nightmare Moon Duel, the Elements put the lives of both princess on hold. They would stay the same age for a full millennium until Luna came home. While some people would consider that long a lifetime to be a massive gift,Β it proved to be a terrible curse for Celestia.
First her mother, Nova Eclipse, now Lunaria, and their father was long gone after a tragedy just before their birth. Luna was all she had left, but now Celestia had no choice but to adapt to living without the only one she had left.

Yup. Still holding to my theory that one of the elements Celestia bore was the Element of Laughter. This just seems so natural to her character in the show.

I don't agree. Celestia also introduces other to harsher elements. When she scolded Twilight she didn't try at all to cheer her up. She let Twilight feel bad about herself. That was the right call but it goes directly against the element of laughter.

Ah, but isn't the first rule of comedy timing? A crucial part to all humor is knowing the time and place where its appropriate. Even Pinkie is aware that not every situation is best solved with fun. In fact, she's gotten herself into trouble in multiple circumstances when she DIDN'T consider this. Besides, as the show has presented on multiple occasions, being a wielder of an element does NOT mean they must follow that element forever, and much like someone can pick up a virtue with time, so too can one be lost. Remember, before AJ became the Element of Honesty, she lied. A lot. (see: Where the Apple Lies) And much like she didn't have the Element of Harmony then, Celestia currently no longer has the Elements of Harmony. She even said herself that the Elements no longer belong to her, meaning she's not necessarily ties to their virtues.
All this said, she still holds a significantly higher sense of humor compared to her sister, even in the more recent episodes of the show. So it stands to reason that, if the elements WERE specifically tied to the sisters individually, Celestia likely would have held the Laughter between the two.

so if the both had three...
Laughter...Kindness...Magic?
which leaves Luna with...
Loyalty, Honesty, and Generosity?
I dunno...

I would switch Loyalty and Magic.
Tia: Laughter, Kindness and Loyalty.
Luna: Honesty, Generosity and Magic.

hummm...
maybe...I still don't know...
IΒ read a theory that when Luna became Nightmare Moon her elements wereΒ reversed
so Loyalty became disloyalty, Honesty became Dishonesty and Generosity became Greed...
it would explain some of her actions when she was Nightmare Moon...
so.. that'sΒ one theory...

Couple things of note:
1) Luna's greatest magical feat as NMM was holding the moon in front of the Sun. Celestia's greatest magical feats are controlling both her sun AND Luna's moon and stars, wielding all elements of harmony at once, and turning a unicorn into an alicorn. While her kind-hearted nature leads her to be less skilled when it comes to combat, none can truly compare to Celestia's magical prowess.
2) Celestia banished her sister to the moon. While it is somewhat unclear how much control the wielders have/had over the EoH, Celestia shows remorse, implying she knew exactly what she was doing at the time. Now I don't know about you, but I would expect someone meant to represent loyalty to look for a better solution rather than a temporary out, especially when it concerns her sister of all people. (might just be me, though. XD)
3) Luna created the Tantabus as repentance for betraying everyone's trust in her. Whenever she thinks back to her disloyalty as Nightmare Moon, it tears her apart, and the Tantabus is her attempt to ensure she stays loyal to Equestria forever more.
Of course, in the end, this is all just heavy speculation on a topic I highly doubt they'll ever cover in the show. As a result, there is no right or wrong, simply feasibility and likelihood.

I think generosity fits Celestia more. She is very selfless in how she does so much thankless work with a smile on her face. She takes on the jobs of many ponies and keeps her emotions hidden because she doesn't want to bother her subjects with them. Celestia's all about giving while getting nothing in return.
You can actually see that well here. Celestia doesn't care about how tired she is and keeps smiling.

firekirby135 In reply to marinus18 [2017-08-14 03:02:30 +0000 UTC]
Very true. To be honest, Generosity was one of the elements that was a bit harder for me to place between the two, considering how well both seem to fit the bill. However, I settled on Luna due to her continuous role watching over the dreams of every single one of her subjects, on top of her always going above and beyond to make nighttime as magnificent as possible for any who chose to cherish it. Plus, it worked more with the corruption idea for Luna to have it, as it meant that not only did Luna turn into a greedy monster, but it would also mean that BOTH wielders of the Element of Generosity would have been corrupted by Nightmare, pushing the idea that those holding the Element are more susceptible to Nightmare. (see: MLP Comic Issues 5-8, the "Nightmare Rarity arc)

Eeyup. That's actually the same possession of the elements back when I came up with the theory. It was actually part of a larger theory I had theorizing about a mental break that pushed Luna to become Nightmare Moon. (the theory being the three elements Luna held all shattered due to her emotions at the time conflicting with the elements themselves, which turned her into a corrupted, opposite version of those very same elements)

she's not laughing because of that stunt.
Laughing is simply her way of dealing with stress, just like some people scream when they're frustrated. Celestia is exhausted already and the day has only just begun.
