Haha thank you!! Who knew a severed head could have so much to express? The more I work on this character the more I want to focus on the idea that the victim of the fungus is still conscious and feels the pain inflicted by the assimilation and that he is eaten alive by the organism!

Ever since I've discovered the fungus of The Last of Us (cordyceps) I have been interested in this idea. Alien is an amazing word to describe it, the fact that an organism is taken over by the fungus and develop growths, fungal plates makes it beautiful and terryfing. It was intentional! The character was created based on this idea of a human being assimilated by an unknown organism/fungus that develops under the skin. The final version of the Patient is inspired by two of my favourite movies The Thing(original) and Splinter which inspired the splintery look of the organism.

Haha, for sure! After that game, I went down a rabbit hole of fungus and bacteria “research,” which didn’t help my already-obsessed interest in it. I was more surprised that I’d never even heard of corcdyceps until The Last of Us... for shame!
That’s awesome! I always enjoy a kind of theme or idea that persists throughout art or music. I think recurring characters could be thought of in that way for visual art. They’re a kind of framework with which you can try new ideas, but still keep that familiarity.

Hahaha exactly what I thought!!
Yeah this is how I see things too plus I wouldn't like my work to be stole by someone else. It is okay to start like that you obviously need inspirations and some basics in order to build upon it to deliver your proper style but I guess some people cannot let go of a style that makes them visible. Plus you have to come up with your own ideas and style at some point, I remember when I started drawing I was trying to mimic the style of marvel and dc comics and it was fine but you end up ignoring the fact that you have build and express your own world even if it means having a different and less visble style. I am so much happier doing my art the way I do because it is mine. The Gigeresque inspiration is there it's true bu your work is far different from his, you have build upon it to deliver something so unique! Aww thank you that is waay too kind my friend!!!

Yup, no one wants their ideas stolen, of course. But an homage can be flattering, for sure.
I can definitely see the comic style in your art! Some of it actually reminds me of the Hellboy comics or the original, darker Ninja Turtles. But you have your own twist on the comic style. Have you ever considered doing a comic series?

I agree I often think about doing homages to the artists that inspired me but then again the best way I feel is to keep on improving and coming up with new ideas and all to make your art bloom! Hellboy is one of my inspirations, well, the style of Mike Mignola even though I'm far from his talent haha! I have in fact thought about it, I wanted to work on dark heroes such as Batman, Simon Dark, Ghost Rider, The Crow but I want to create my own chracters. I think the most comics related character I have done is the one represented in the drawing "Were we even human?"

I’ve been in that spot a few times as well. I think about doing an homage, but then I get other ideas and decide I should pursue those instead. I do remember drawing a lot of horror movie characters as a kid, which got me into drawing, but I don’t think I’d ever really show something like that publicly. I just don’t get the the same amount of enjoyment or sense of accomplishment from recreating something. I always prefer to come up with something that (to my knowledge) doesn’t yet exist.

Yeah I can definitly relate to that. And recently with a tribute I did for The Crow and Brandon Lee. I love the movie, the character and really wanted to do it/him justice but as I was nearly finished with the piece I felt a bit frustrated because it was something that already existed and had been done better and countless times before. I am always distracted by the need of working/sketching something new that has not been done before. That's why most of my posts are characters that I came up with rather than producing another version of a character made by someone else even truer when it comes to monsters. You want to build/create your own creatures/nightmares. That's something horror movies heavily influenced me to do.
