Description The Mogwomps are truly remarkable creatures in the way they have worked their way into modern society. They are at once, extremely convenient, very easy to accommodate and are rapidly becoming indispensable in their chosen vocations, in which they have the market cornered. I shall elaborate.

Outwardly, the Mogwomp has the appearance of a large, bipedal pack beast, some sort of amalgamation between a Farkus Beast and the Dragons that walked the land before our time. The Mogwomps themselves certainly cling to the belief that they are in fact the decedents of the great dragons, which, certainly in regards to their intelligence is looking increasingly likely.

In addition to being fast, capable of further travel, relative comfort and considerable lifting strength in comparison to all other beast of burden, the Mogwomp is also fluent in the three standard global languages and are brilliant navigators.

To that end, instead of buying one from a stable like one would a horse, the money is given directly to the Mogwomp at either an hourly rate or, for extended need, the Mogwomp is actually a contracted employee on a wage.

Many have queried the Mogwomps desire for currency given their demonstrated ability as omnivorous hunters and collectors and tendency to sleep outdoors comfortably, even in harsh weather. The Mogwomps have gone on to explain that pancakes, pasta and crème brulee are at this stage not naturally occurring in the wild, so they'd rather operate within the confines of civilised society and enjoy the spoils of it as we do. Many cities have since widened their doorways and hallways to accommodate their presence amongst us.

Hiring a Mogwomp is by no means cheap, but it carries with it many advantages. As no riding experience is required, you need but tell one where you wish to go and it will understand and take you there, most likely either making polite conversation or singing an upbeat Orcish tune along the way.

They are not without their defensive capabilities either,. A Mogwomp can, for brief periods, balance itself on its tail and deliver a devastating kick with both of its hind legs at once, which is capable of disembowelling anyone unfortunate enough to be in the way.

They are also able to spray a volatile chemical from a gland located in their mandible, which is made more dangerous again by the addition of the crude but effective "Battle Scarf" of their own design and manufacture, which effectively allows them to breathe fire.

It is perhaps reassuring then, to know that Mogwomp’s are extremely even tempered and are even considered ‘offensively polite’ by some people. There are however two guaranteed ways to earn their ire.

The first is in regards to their territory. When communicating to each other, the Mogwomps produce a shrill, staccato "Kuuukukukukukukukukukku" sound to let each other know where they are. When they detect something other than a Mogwomp approaching their habitat, they will split the air with a piercing "COOOOOOOeeEEE!" cry. If this cry is not returned then they will assume outright that whoever is approaching is trying to sneak up on them and be most displeased.

Secondly, they are exceptionally proud, as an entire species of their prowess as brewers and will react with severe hostility to anyone who suggests rightly or wrongly that their beer is substandard.

That's all I have for now.

I'm getting some real "Dinotopia" vibes from this. And I mean that in the best way possible- despite having some New Age pansy, "let's all get along and eat vegetables" philosophy, those books had some of the most gorgeous dino art I've ever seen.

Probably more personable to humans than your average Eldar, anyway. Especially if the humans can make pancakes.

I love it. I love the whole concept of a sentient mount that you hire instead of own, and all the haggling that would entail. "Riding our backs" is often used as a metaphor for menial exploitation, but this turns it on it's head. I can imagine Mogwomp warlords who purchase slaves to ride on their backs, to shoot arrows and/or draw fire.

The only problem I foresee with their design is that head spike. If the rider is thrown from the saddle, it could impale him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr-Culexus In reply to hrhtomas [2012-07-28 02:55:36 +0000 UTC]

Mogwomps don't to have warlords per se. The old and strong may be calle upon for tough decisions but thats as close as they get to a power structure.

They have actually put their crest to good use in exactly this way when a brigand tries to hijack them.
