Here we go, a walkthrough of this piece -

Not much else to say. About . . . 25 hours, maybe, over two weekends? Felt like it should've been quicker, but I'm rusty so hey. S'all good.

Acrylic on canvas, 24"x36"
And yes, the first person to mention Ashley Wood gets no prizes

I get anxious just looking at traditional Painting. So stressful for me, no Undo option I really love this piece, and am always a fan of your Step by Step pieces. Very nice

I recognize those apartments, very nice ^_^

Aerozopher [2010-05-21 19:01:49 +0000 UTC]

so you mix everywhere a bit of a complementary colour in? I mean the surfaces.
I should try that too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to Aerozopher [2010-05-21 23:19:22 +0000 UTC]

yup; even though it ended up being mostly beige/grey a lot of the neutrals are made up of a direct mix of blue and sienna so you get some variation in there.

May I know what colors did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to stoic1985 [2010-05-24 01:37:26 +0000 UTC]

Aside from black/white, um, unbleached titanium, yellow oxide, burnt sienna, an orange whose name escapes me, and cerulean blue.

stoic1985 In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-05-24 03:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thank you! The color combination is amazing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to stoic1985 [2010-05-24 03:42:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks kindly!
The main two would be the burnt sienna and the blue - it's surprising how nice a grey you can get with just those two, and how easy it is then to push it warm or cold just by adjusting the quantities

stoic1985 In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-05-24 12:21:00 +0000 UTC]

I usually use ultramarine + burnt sienna (and sometimes with cadmium red) to get my greys but I have yet to try it with cerulean. Thanks for the tip, will try it soon! Also, I think the unbleached titanium adds a great muted warm tone to balance the coolness.

There're some comparisons with Ashley Wood, but I do prefer your rendition as Wood tends to verve towards a more sketchy feel. Yours is more, do I dare say, refined (which makes it pop even more for a traditional piece).

Keep up the stellar work in any case. And also, really appreciate all your feedback.

Mr--Jack In reply to stoic1985 [2010-05-24 16:13:36 +0000 UTC]

No problems at all
I didn't have any real fancy reason why I chose cerulean over anything else, my collection of acrylics is not that extensive at the moment so it was more about what I had in hand.

I'm certainly going to have to play around a bit more myself!

I think you should! They are a lot easier to blend and use imo, but they do dry A LOT slower than acrylics. So yep you should definitely try them ^^
