These are nice! An often forgotten practice among digital (and traditional) artists.
Quick question: how do you decide the colors? Do you make a sample palette from the original beforehand, or do you just go along trying to mach them visually as you draw?

CatalanoMedia [2013-06-27 02:49:48 +0000 UTC]

So do you change the camera angle at all? Or just draw what you get?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to CatalanoMedia [2013-06-27 15:36:28 +0000 UTC]

I rotate the camera around, but I try not to walk around too much from where I start

CatalanoMedia In reply to Mr--Jack [2013-06-28 01:59:57 +0000 UTC]

cool, thanks.
Some of the angles it gives you are kinda boring....

BunnyFroofroo [2013-06-27 02:24:54 +0000 UTC]

These are gorgeous! How do you get such straight lines? They look like they were done perfectly with one stroke.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to BunnyFroofroo [2013-06-27 15:38:08 +0000 UTC]

Some of the straighter lines and edges (some hill edges, roadside barriers) were done with selections; others (lines on the roads etc) were just done with one or two strokes. (as long as you don't count all the strokes I ctrl-z'd ^_^ )

Aha! I knew the first one was from British Columbia before I even read the comments. Home sweet home.
Your paintings are astounding. So many of the strokes seem so simple, yet they convey so much. And the colours are spot-on!

Hey, very cool stuff. I was wondering... how do you get the very sharp edges, is that by using the lasso tool or do you use the focus tool? Also, love the darker tree in the second pic, do you just use a square brush there and then erase around the edges and inside, or do you use any other brush? Am I getting too nosy into your secrets?
Btw, I also really like the light reflected in the sea. Thanks for sharing your art!

Really slick, per usual love the square brush. Curious if you're color picking for speed and accuracy on these guys?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to PaulReinwand [2013-06-24 03:35:24 +0000 UTC]

No colour picking, part of the point of the exercise is to be working on my understanding of light and colour in environments like this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaulReinwand In reply to Mr--Jack [2013-06-24 03:58:52 +0000 UTC]

Purely curious. It seems like color picking can be a good tool, even if it feels like cheating sometimes

ReallyUnlucky [2013-06-24 01:50:32 +0000 UTC]

How do you get such clean, straight lines for things like the road markings and guard rails?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to ReallyUnlucky [2013-06-24 03:36:28 +0000 UTC]

Some of the road markings are just painted (and ctr-z'd a whole lot) but for the railings and stuff a lot of it's just the lasso tool
