Description

When: June 10, 2019

Where: Zoo Dortmund, Germany

First time EVER seeing this animal We had good reason to visit, because a baby was born (we only caught a tiny, really bad view of him in the dark nesting box) but we also knew it would be really hard seeing them. If you can't tell from this girl's eyes, they're nocturnal, and spent their days sleeping.

We were lucky to be there just ahead of feeding time, and with a zoo keeper next to me, also waiting to see them, we learned a lot

Species: Kinkajou (Rolstaartbeer)

Latin name: Potos Flavus

Originates from South America.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

…They are also called Honey Bear.

…The Kinkajou is the only member of the genus Potus, but they are part of the Procyonidae family so are related to Coatis, Raccoons and the like.

…It’s an arboreal species, with a fully prehensile tail which they use as a “fifth hand”.

I first encountered a kinkajou when one was a protagonist in the Andre Norton book "Catseye" (which I loved so much I just never returned the school library copy (I had it out continuously until I left school at which point I was allowed to keep it - nobody else had requested it during that time which I really didn't and don't understand to this day).

Some animals - and books for that matter - are kind of underappreciated

Haha, you weren't even fined for keeping it? That's pretty awesome that you got to keep it in the end

Nope - I had it out legitimately until I was about to leave the school and at that point they decided they were going to replace it as old stock. Lucky for me, a bit tough on everyone else I guess They say "if you love something set it free" but that doesn't apply to books obviously!

Great capture! Great expression!

I had one as a pet when I was a kid. As he matured, he started getting aggressive. We gave him to a game park in Pennsylvania for there breeding program.

Thanks

Oh wow, I've heard of that - them being kept as pet, being mostly friendly but also having that aggressive side.

Hope he fathered many cute babies and contributed to the surivival of and education on these animals

My mother was very angry with my father when he brought the critter home. He was never aggressive to my sister or myself. But.....as he was maturing and becoming sexually active, my grandfather use to tease him. One day he got his earlobe bit and ripped partially off for his tormenting. That when my parent looked for a new home for him. I am glad they did not choose to put him down; for truly, my grandfather should never have tormented him.
I am sure he did!

That sound very... bloody

But yes, one should be aware of the consequences of teasing an animal with sharp teeth and claws - what goes around comes around in the end.

Happy he got a new chance at life despite his bloody altercation with your grandfather

Gramp's brought it on himself, and I do think the critter was better off at the game park.
