Did you know:
…The Great Hornbill has many other names as well; they are also called Concave-Casqued Hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill and Great Pied Hornbill.
…It is one of the larger members of the Hornbill family; it is the heaviest but not the longest Asian Hornbill.
…Females are smaller than males, and have a blue-ish white instead of red eyes, although the orbital skin is pinkish. Both genders have prominent eyelashes.
…Great Hornbill are extremely selective when it comes to choosing a mate, and they create long and strong pair bonds. This makes them very hard to keep in captivity and breed with the species.
…Their most prominent feature is their horn, a casque on top of the beak. When viewed from the front, the casque is u-shaped but on top concave. The back of the casque is reddish in females, while the underside of the front and back of the casque is black in males.
…They are very well-known for their habits when breeding – the female will nest in a hollow tree trunk, closing up the entrance with a plaster made mainly from feces. She imprisons herself while breeding, relying solely on the male for providing her with food. Once the female emerges from the nest, the chicks will close it up again.
…The Great Hornbill is hunted for traditional use – the beak and head are used in charms, while the meat is thought to be medicinal, while chicks are considered a delicacy. Feathers are used in head dresses, and heads worn for decoration.
