Description
When: April 20, 2019
Where: Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands
These Birds are so photogenic but photographing them is often not that easy. Especially here - the distance to them is really big, which is why I'm very pleased with how this turned out
Species: Hamerkop
Latin name: Scopus Umbretta
Originates from Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The Hamerkop is known by many names: Hammerkop, Hammerkopf, Hammerhead (Stork) Umbrette, Umber Bird, Tufted Umber, or Anvilhead.
…It constitutes a family and genus all on its own because of its unique characteristics.
…It has a long, flat and slightly hooked bill and only partially webbed feet.
…The Hamerkop’s name is derived from the shape of its head – with a long bill and crest at the back of the head – which is reminiscent of a hammer.

What brilliant capture of such a unique bird. I also thought the neck was missing at first and had to check to make sure. Such a unique bird. It's beak looks like 45% pelican, 45% stork, and 10% crow. Its head looks on the top like a small songbird head, yet on the bottom it looks like the bird is trying to become the bird version of Ambrose Burnside the forefather of Sideburns.

Thank you so much
I love this Bird species, because it is so unique - indeed, resembling a lot of different Birds at once but not fitting any of them to a T.

Haha, I get why you'd think that, but this is actuall y how they look
Imagine a hammer, and then take a look at this Bird again, the name will also make more sense (hammer-head)

its head looks too big for its neck, is it missing some feathers, or is it supposed to look like that?

Haha, I think if he saw himself like this, he'd be a bit startled - his hammer-head looks a bit extreme this way!

They remind me of the birds in "Alice in Wonderland" from Disney, you know? The shovel-birds and all the others - weird physiognomy for a "aaww" effect.

Cute bird, that is weird how it looks as though something were missing from his neck, like feathers. Is this a young one?
