Description Man, it's been taking FOREVER to get some decent time to sit down and pound out a lot of details on this thing, but I finally got the whole day to work on this. I like how it is turning out, although I am still unsure of what the forehead will look like.
It will probably have a ball/eye in the middle, but the layout is still in the works.

Looking forward to seeing this mask done.  I am loving the details you have so far.  I have to ask, are you using Monster Clay to sculpt this?

Yes I am! Thank you for not guessing chocolate like so many before you...

Lol, I imagine chocolate would be a horrible medium to use to make a mold with.  What a mess!  I only know about Monster Clay thanks to Emily Coleman's book 'Creature Sculpt' though.  It looks like it holds detail beautifully.

Personally, I cannot recommend it enough. I have tried working with oil based clay before and this is by far, the best I have used because it is waxed based clay. Heat it in the microwave, hardens to knock-against strength at room temp. It changed the way I make things and I find it a very agreeable medium to work with. And when you are done, melt it down in a slow cooker (specifically for the clay, not for eating out of) and pour it back into the tub for like-factory-new clay!

Very nice!  If in the future I ever get to the point where I want to create something to make a mold of I will have to to pick some up!  XD

I have been toying with the idea of texturing the nose and tongue. Thoughts?

Great design choices, excellent use of the "auspicious clouds" elements.

What technique do you use to smooth the monster clay? I prefer using a hair dryer and then brush on WD40 to smooth down rough details and even it out.

I use a heat gun and mineral spirits which temporarily melt the surface of the clay and then evaporates, allowing you to smooth it with a brush.

I tried using mineral spirits but the smell made feel sick after a while, so I now only use WD40 instead. It has a much less intense smell and works the same way. Some also use alcohol, but it often leaves the clay with a white residue so I avoid it.

He advised mineral spirits when I asked. It works out really well

Try orderless mineral spirits. I have heard the WD40 trick, but have nt tried it. I am surprised that the alcohol worked, when I tried it I had no results whatsoever!

Too bad odorless mineral spirits costs so much more than a can of WD40 where I live sadly :/ Or else I would have used it.
Yeah the alcohol is pretty weak in comparison. I know some mix mineral spirits and alcohol in a 60/40 ratio and use that. Appearantly to slow down the softening of the mineral spirits.

Does the WD 40 evaporate off the surface, or does it stay on the surface like cooking spray?

Coeurlregina In reply to mostlymade [2014-01-28 15:51:07 +0000 UTC]

It evaporates, but it's best to have it in a bowl and dip the brush in that than spray it directly on the clay. It leaves a matte surface which I prefer in my casts and transfers very well to the silicone.
