Description It had been a week since Jack had died. In that time he had watched his family and friends morn over his loss, unable to do anything.

Since that first night, when Jack had discovered his power over frost, he had tried to write a message to his sister on her window, but every time she had not noticed or it had melted before she had seen them. He did not want to write it while she watched, because it would probably scare her out of the room before he was done.

Jack spent the nights practicing his new powers and watching his sister dream, after finding that he no longer got tired like he used to he needed something to do. Twice he had tried to follow the sand that covered his sister, but, not wanting to go to far, he had yet to find out where it came from.

During the day he followed his sister around, she still had to go to school. Though the teacher did not ask her anything and the other kids were careful about what they said to her.

People had shown up at his house continuously, checking to make sure his family was holding up, giving them what food they could spare. Jacks mother tired to refuse all the food at first, but eventually accepted some of it. His father made himself busy, burying himself in his work as much as possible.

After two days a friend of Jacks mother came over to their house. Olivia was just leaving for school in a daze when she arrived. The women, Elizabeth, sat in the families kitchen, watching Olivia get ready.

As soon as she had gone, Jacks mother joined her.

"I know it's hard" Elizabeth said, grabbing onto his mothers hand, "But the two of you have to have a memorial for Jack. It's only right."

His mother nodded, "We know, it's just hard." She shook her head, "We really don't know what to do, or where we would even have it."

Elizabeth sighed, "Some of us have been talking" She began, "We know how hard it is for the three of you, but" Elizabeth paused, "We think you should have it at the pond"

Jacks mother looked at the women with surprise, "What? Why would you think that was a good idea?" She took her hand out of the other women's grip.

"We feel" Elizabeth explained, "That not only would it help you and everyone else to let go, but that it would be respectful to Jack. After all, he gave his life saving Olivia on that pond."

Jacks mother sighed, "I suppose you're right. I'll discuss it with George tonight."

Elizabeth got up and placed her hand on the other woman's shoulder, "If you like, me and some others can take care of organizing it. To make it easier."

"No, this is something we have to do" Jacks mother answered, with a slight smile.

Now Jack was watching his own memorial, it was a strange feeling, seeing so many of the towns people show up.

Many of the adults in the town often complained that he played to many pranks and did not take anything seriously. Now, everyone in the small town had gathered at the pond to pay their respects.

Some of the younger children did not fully understand what was going on, but were crying the hardest when they were told they would never get to play with Jack anymore. They cried as they asked why, if he was in trouble, saying that whatever he did was not his fault, or that they would be extra good, just so they could keep playing with the teen.

It was hardest to watch the kids cry. So many of them could not understand that no one had done anything wrong, and no one wanted to explain death to someone so young. Jack kept trying to tell the kids that he was alright and not to worry, but they still could not see him.

In the past week he had seen a lot of parents trying to explain why they had not seen Jack, most thought he was sick and wanted to give him well wishes. Death was not an easy concept for a young mind.

After a ceremony to honor Jack the towns people were mingling, most of them exchanging stories of the teen. Some had left, weather because they simply could not take the sadness or had things that needed to be done, it didn't matter. After all, they had come, and their was not much more they could do.

Jack wondered around, finding it funny how different versions of stories were being told. Most of them spoke of how wild he had been. A few said that even if they complained about him, it had been nice for the kids to have someone responsible around. Many of the towns folk poked fun at one another, saying how the stories were different now that he was dead.

Even in the happier groups, the mood changed with no warning. Going from a happy atmosphere when they told a story about Jack cheering up a sick child, to an unpleasant one when they realized he would no longer be around to do such things.

Some people spoke about how often they had left their children with Jack, knowing that even if he was 'crazy at times' he would always put the kids safety first. They realized how much they had taken him for granted.

Jack knew that none of the towns people could see or hear him, still he tried to reassure them. It was odd, most of the towns people had told him to 'act his age' or to stop fooling around with the kids. Many of them told him he was old enough to have a wife of his own, and if he liked children so much he should start a family. Finally he got tired of hearing about how great he was from people that had constantly criticized him and went to find his sister.

Olivia was sitting against a tree with her legs pulled up against her chest, staring at the spot on the pond where Jack had fallen in. Jack went and sat next to her, wishing that he could pull her into a tight hug.

One of Olivias friends came up to her and started to sit down, right where Jack was, he quickly moved out of the way.

"You'll be okay" She said, "My Daddy says that when people die they go to heaven to watch over us." Jack remembered that this little girl, June, had lost her mother the year before, "So now Jack is with my mom, making sure we're safe."

June pulled Olivia into the hug Jack couldn't give her, as Olivia cried. "Do you really think he'll be watching over me?" Olivia asked, finally pulling away, her friend just nodded.

Jack smiled a bit and leaned against his staff, "No matter what, I'll always be here for you" He said quietly to himself.
