Would he really have defended anyone's statements if he did not agree with them, because he felt they had the right to say them? He's still a good read (I read "The Philosophical Dictionary" about five years ago. His history about King Louis XIV is pretty solid for an 18th Century history - it was the one that introduced the story of the "Man in the Iron Mask".
