Technically they're from the same family, I just thought of a Mastiff since they're just so huge (like Dwalin) 
I love dogs from the 'Bull' family since I just love their cheeks and droopy faces. I just wanna hug them all!

For Legolas I always think of fast and sleek dogs, so I picture him with a Borzoi, Whippet or Saluki (I like the Saluki since they're generally white/gold in their hair colouring)

its a term used for Dori, Nori and Ori since they're brothers and its just easier to type then putting all three. 
this also applies to Bifur, Bombur and Bofur they are called The family of 'Ur
