Agni is one of the most important deities in the Pantheon of Gods from Indian Mythology, though he is one the most underplayed as well in the current era.
Agni not only signifies the elemental fire, but he is also th spiritual fire that makes the cosmos work, in fact the Vedas give an Idea as to Agni being the creator of the universe as well as its destroyer.
Agni is called Vaisvanara which really means "universal man" but int he later scriptures this epithet of Agni has been downplayed into the fire that digests our food.
Agni is also called Jatavedas for he knows all and is omniscient!
In the Rig-Veda he is described as having three heads,three legs,seven arms, four horns,seven tongues and flaming hair.

It represents his three forms as flame, sun and lightning. And alternatively his presence in the three realms: Bhur -earth/the material plane/the realm outside of us,Β Bhuva-the metaphysical plane/the realm that connects the other two realms,Β Svar- The heavens/the realm of consciousness/the realm within.
Another representation of it is his presence in all phases of time past, present and future. All three variants are true in Agni's case. His three legs is the same three steps of Vishnu, because Agni IS Vishnu.Β

Agni, as being the fire itself, was also personified as the fire of Indra's thunderbolt and lightning, and the flames and light of Surya's sun chariot, so really, Agni is one of the greatest gods in the entire pantheon
