the depth of field on this is amazing! the foreground is tack sharp and, at least at this size, the mountains seem to be equally sharp.
what lens were you using if i may ask? maybe the canon 10-22mm or perhaps the sigma 10-20mm?

Thanks, the foreground in the full version is very sharp and the dof runs back to about the far tree line which is slightly soft.

I find the foreground to generally be a lot more important to get sharp than the mid and distance, the mountains in the background don't really need to be nearly as sharp as the foreground to give the impression of being fairly sharp. As it's so much further away there is less detail seen so as long as it isn't very soft it looks acceptable sharp.

For this shot I focused on the third sleeper in to get the depth of field quite close to the front of the frame, you can see a little bit of softness on the bottom right of the rail that's the near limit. The far tree-line is soft but there is enough detail to still make it seem acceptably sharp.

Generally I don't go over about f8 or f11 on the sigma 10-20 as I find with careful focusing you can mostly get as much dof as you really need and it means I don't have to spend a few hours cloning out all the little bits of dust.

nice. i really appreciate your extensive reply. i've been looking at getting the sigma 10-20mm for my sony a700. i've heard nothing but good things about it but it really helps to actually see pictures made with it.
besides the dust issue, how is the image quality at say f/16?

The lens is a bit soft wide open but then most lenses in that price range are but once you go to about f8 to get a large dof it's great. I was quite surprised by the sharpness from it, I've used it up to f22 and even then the diffraction doesn't seem to be much of an issue. They are softer to an extent but not that bad still perfectly usable.

A lot of my Canadian shots where taken with the 10-20mm as I bought it specifically for that trip as I wanted something ultra wide to take landscape photos with.

thanks. first hand info is always most helpful. tamron announced a 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 but i've seen neither hide nor hair of it and i don't really want to wait for something that may be inferior.
