4chan is a website, I wouldn't go there, just in case. It is, as an entity, the most powerful thing on the internet. There's some pretty messed up stuff there, though, which is why it's funny that they've taken such an interest in a My Little Pony show.

It's an image board, it's vaguely similar to Deviantart, but it's format might confuse you at first. Not all parts are bad, you just want to stay away from /b/ (one of the sub-boards) and similar sub boards. /co/ is safe; in fact, they're some of the first ones to get their hands on "Friendship is Magic" and /b/ helped to really ignite interest on the internet.

Yeah, the layout of 4chan is a little confusing; funny stuff there, though. It's layout is somewhat similar to forums. Here' the basic idea of 4chan: It's one big message board that's divided into a series of sub-boards, each of those are represented by one (or in some cases, two or three) letters of the alphabet.
For example, /a/ is the anime image board, where people start topics (usually about anime) with a picture of anime. /b/ is the "random" image board, but don't expect any lighthearted random stuff there, they have a pretty dark sense of humor. /co/ is an image board for comics and cartoons.
The way this relates to "Friendship is Magic" is that /co/, the board about comics and cartoons, naturally caught wind of the show first. They found that they enjoyed the unique animation style of show, and praised it. /b/ found out about the show as well, and while some of them thought that it would just be a good laugh to follow the show and make fan art of it, others found themselves legitimately interested in the show and its characters.

It has many similarities to a forum, but there are no real usernames, and no search or filter features, so you pretty much just get what you get. Yeah, I've been there, I have quite a bit of experience and a pretty strong stomach, so I can put up with a lot of the more "unclean" things than most people can. And I'm not sure where the show will go; given the sheer magnitude of references and reaction pictures, I don't count on it going the same way as "puddi" or weaker memes did. Plus, there are new episodes all the time, so interest is refreshed every so often. Huh, maybe I shouldn't be analyzing the formation of memes so much, but whatever.
