Description Well, what can I say... it's just a shuriken model...
Not a copy of any existing shuriken type/model, sort of my own desing.
Looks kinda too old though...
...
Modeled in 3dsmax4, rendered with V-Ray.

Thanks
I use 3dsmax 4 + Photoshop 7

oh I am blind, you already said what progs you used. How long did it take you to get so skilled in those progs? I have dabbled in 3D max (dabbled being the operative word) and I can see it can be complicated to get really nice shapes and effects unless you really know your stuff (whhich you obviously do!)

Very realistic, and badass.

Where you learn to do this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-02 21:51:10 +0000 UTC]

Learn? Which part? Realistic or badass?
...just kidding

Actually, I'm self-taught. At first, did some basic tutorials, kinda liked the whole thing, and now I'm modeling for almost ten years.

Whole thing!

Where'd you go to learn?

Tis really complicated to do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-03 14:25:43 +0000 UTC]

Where? Nowhere, I learned at home

I meant websites.

Still nowhere
I meant, I used the tutorials which come with 3dsmax itself.

PS 3dtotal.com has some nice tutorials as well.

How long it took you to render that terminator model?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-04 20:45:08 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember exactly, but I think it was about 4-5 hours (at 3000x4500 size).
(with AMD Athlon X2 3800+ cpu)

xXDiAbLoXx In reply to mmarti [2010-01-04 20:50:20 +0000 UTC]

So could you split animations up to render faster?

Why's it so slow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-04 22:29:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, with still images you want to get best quality you can get, thus it might get a little slow.
Besides, hardware was slower back then as well.
With new quad-core cpus the same rendering should take about 2 hours instead of 4-5.

You usually render it on a laptop with solar panels?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-05 00:13:58 +0000 UTC]

Nope, just a desktop computer.
I don't have laptop - have no use for it

Splines are good for modeling?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-05 07:13:37 +0000 UTC]

For beginners, splines might seem easy to master, but as models get more complex, splines can become really messy, especially trying to animate them.

I used to model with splines long time ago, until I "discovered" subdivision modeling.

xXDiAbLoXx In reply to mmarti [2010-01-05 07:15:36 +0000 UTC]

Subdivision?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-05 09:15:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's a modeling technique.
Some call it box-modeling.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXDiAbLoXx In reply to mmarti [2010-01-05 18:14:10 +0000 UTC]

Ah, you start out with boxes and work with them?

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-05 19:32:24 +0000 UTC]

Yup, pretty much.

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-06 20:02:19 +0000 UTC]

Not soon, I don't have time to do any new models

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXDiAbLoXx In reply to mmarti [2010-01-14 08:46:30 +0000 UTC]

Why are boxes great anyway?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-14 08:52:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, all modeling techniques have their pros and cons. I like box-modeling because if its intuitivety - it's like sculpting in real life. You take a large chunk of stone and start chiseling away all unneeded parts, adding details.

Is it possible to create new vertices at all?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-14 09:26:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't know about editable poly, but as for editable mesh - yes, it is possible, but pointless, since the vertex isn't connected to any of the edges. It's just point in the space.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXDiAbLoXx In reply to mmarti [2010-01-15 07:04:34 +0000 UTC]

Ok. Is it better to build a model with multiple objects then, perhaps, fuse them later or just go with one box object?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-15 07:25:31 +0000 UTC]

It really depends on what you're modeling. Robots and cyborgs (their heads), for example, are easier to model part by part, yes. But human head is usually easier to do as whole.
There are no rules, just model as you see fit.

Can you use objects for clothes? How do clothes fit in with your (naked) model?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to xXDiAbLoXx [2010-01-15 09:40:19 +0000 UTC]

You try to model them as close to the body as possible.. Sometimes you use cloth simulation plugins as well. It's pretty pain in the a** though. Don't like it
