I'm confused on something, some people actually do have almond shaped eyes, and as far as pagents go they are the preferred cosmetic eye shape so why is the almond eye shape "wrong" in your opinion

I think it's more about learning a good foundation so that you can stylize it down to your preferred method. Though almond eye isn't bad per-say if you wanted to start rather stylized (honestly its the way I used to draw them) I can however attest that you can get yourself into some trouble on certain angles without a good foundation.
That's my thoughts. We'll see what Doxy says.
