I've played a bit of the first one recently (late last year), but eventually gave up on it because of some gameplay issues I had with it. The characters, story, concept, and character designs I rather liked, but the gameplay was just a little too grindy and repetitive for my tastes; I didn't have the patience to slog through it and went on to other games instead (Tales of Graces f and now Tales of Xillia). Apparently a lot of what I had problems with is fixed in its sequel, but I haven't got around to playing it yet though I have seen some of it played.
