It's not granite, it's columnar basalt. Iceland is one of the few places in the world that has them. They're made when massive volcanic eruptions in the distant past deposited large amounts of very hot ash. While the top layers of the ash could cool fairly rapidly, the deeper parts would be insulated for a long time, allowing the large columnar crystals that you see here to form.
I've been living in Eastern Washington State, which also has them.

thanks for the info! i have always wanted to see iceland but i catch colds real easy here in the UK where i am....
so i havent really gotten up the courage to make the trip there yet.
me and cold do not mix!
but the northern lights.... the waterfalls...the rolling mountains.... in winter, the frozen waterfalls.... these things inspire and amaze.
one day i will get over there
