Another great background! You should be working at an animation studio with that stuff.

I love classic animation. I'm also sort of a Wanna Be Animator but didn't appreciate it enough when I was young to pursue the field. Plus I was 3000 miles away from Hollywood growing up. Such a career possibilityΒ was never discussed by my art teachers. It was always "Get into a fine art type show!". That was what art was all about to them. Commercial art was just commercial art!

Hey, this is nice work. The background shading is beautiful.
And what's happening to poor Velma? I can see the number 13 on the door, the ladder, the broken mirror, and I think I can spot a black cat on the handkerchief (sp?) What are the other back luck symbols?

Well, I had to review the drawing to remind myself of all the symbols. But they include an open umbrella, a broken mirror and spilled salt shaker. Also the clock has both hand straight up pointing NOT at twelve, but a numeral 13! I think that's all of them along with the ones you pointed out already.

Very clever idea. I like the expression and pose, and how everything is in grayscale except Velma. nice work!

Thanks for noticing the monochromatic surroundings, I don't think anyone else has noticed(or at least they haven't mentioned it)this. I think it's a cool look.

Oooh, very cool, I love the subtle color
Let's see, there's the spilled salt, the open umberalla, the number 13 on the door, the broken mirror, the 13 on the clock, the ladder if she walks under it, the black cat on the napkin...that's all the ones I know

Very creative, just love it

Did I miss an evil eye?

Very cute concept. Your customer must be doubly pleased -- with the quality of the art and the smart way to show how many bad luck signs there could be. I assume the latter is an added bonus, not a request.

I love your shading, especially on her legs and on the orange sweater. The tiny pot-belly is a hoot.

I have to be honest, the Bad Luck elements were 100% the commissioner's idea. You didn't miss the Evil Eye, but I did! Not a terribly obvious Bad Luck element but a GOOD one I should have included.
The rendering on the figure of Velma went WAAAAAY too contrasty in this scan! Everytime I look at it I hate it more! And now people are complimenting me on it!!!! NO! It looks like crap! I have to re-scan and repost when time allows.

Sorry. Didn't mean to bring you down with the compliment. It would be interesting to see what it would look like after the rescan though.

Chapter 2 of Temple of Doo! is going up.

Hey I thought of you today! I was in a walmart and apparently they are running an ad for Dove shampoo (I think) well they have testimonials from Wilma Flintstone, Judy Jetson, and yes, Velma Dinkley. Have you sen this yet? I dont think its on tv, just at walmart, but I don't watch television so I could be wrong.

I love how she is vibrantly coloured and the rest of the rooms is dreary and pale with subtle hints of blue. Wonderful colours coming from the door and the depth & detail of the shading just draws you in it's so lovely.

I wanted to get the black cat image in there, but I didn't want to just show a real live cat in this old abandoned house. Simce I also needed to show a dinner table for the spilled salt symbol to make any sense, I killed two birds with one stone by including the embroidered cat napkin. Try as I might, however, I couldn't integrate the open umbrella any better than I did. Thanks,

BTW, just want to point out that the scan of this piece is MUCH more contrasty than the actual piece is. Especially in the figure of Velma. Something about posting at DA, always increases the contrast for some reason. Sometimes it's a good thing...but in this case it is not!

Really nice concept, and again really great use of color. One begins to wonder is Scooby Doo is even worth applying this level of artistry to.

Well, it's worth it when someone is PAYING you to do it!

It's funny how what is essentially a disposable form of entertainment, the Saturday Morning Cartoon, can inspire people to write stories, do art and take the original concept to a higher level. I look at Robert Williams, Todd Shore, Isabel Samaris with all their pop icon, TV and cartoon referencing work and it amazes me the beautiful art that they create based on this stuff.
Thanks for the kind words. The worst thing about me and my work is wanting to re-do every piece I create! I see so many things I do differently on this drawing now. I'd never get anything finished if I started over on every single drawing or painting that I do.

I'm familiar with Robert Williams to a small degree, not so much with the others you mentioned. I'll have to look them up. It probably makes since that their's and other people's pop-derived art is so interesting and powerful because they're actually working off of the enchantment and social impact these creations had on them. A fan's appreciation for a work tends to exceed the inherent quality of the work itself. That, and I personally never got into Scooby Doo, it's just not my thing. That doesn't mean there aren't good points about it, points that you utilized to excellent effects in this work.

Well put! Charles Dickens was the pop trash of his day...today he's almost classic literiture. Hmmm, he wrote many stories about ghosts and hauntings...there's nothing new under the sun.
