I love the grunts. I kinda hate when people say they're not scary because they look do ridiculous when in reality they'd shit their pants of they saw one.

I found that game boring is hell. 90% of the time I was just running and jumping all over the place throwing books and other scenery objects everywhere in the dark with no sense of direction. it's sort of atmospheric, but generally very bland and slow gameplay wise.
also I find it disappointing to hear you can't kill those crazy dudes with the hilariously stretched out vagineer faces, I know its much scarier to be defenseless but come on! it could be a good way to create tension of you needed to kill one to move on and only had one shot to do it or something. aside from that lighting mutants on fire is no opportunity to sneeze at

Well maybe you just fucking suck and can't appreciate a beautifully crafted game....
.....I will no sit here and have you shit on amnesia but I will say that I enjoy the custom stories a bit more. Some custom stories are almost better than the original game.

I never said it was necessarily a poorly made game, I mean you can tell a lot of passion went in to making it considering how much of hit it was and the attention to detail in it.... it just doesn't do anything at all for me personally, in the gameplay anyways. If I'm going to play puzzle game I prefer something like portal 2 where you at least have more opportunity to screw around if you get stuck and have GLados/wheatley constantly taunting you throughout rather than being alone and forced to read journal entries, or something like Tomb Raider where the puzzles are interspersed between platforming and shooting mutants in the face. Sometimes it's hard to go ten minutes in a video game without blowing shit up y'know?

I agree with you on portal 2, that's like in the top 5 of my favorite games. But even though your my friend there are certain things I just won't listen to. I know amnesia is unnecessarily cryptic sometimes but hey, that's why walkthroughs exist.

eh, I think part of the reason you regard it so flawlessly is that you've never actually played it as you said, I mean if you played it almost completely blind like I did, with no expectations other than it's apparently scary and the enemies at the end have silly faces you'd at least relate to some of the complaints more, you can end up forming a very different opinion of things if you have a more second-hand reaction watching other people play it instead of experiencing it firsthand. you may see people who are easily scared losing their mind at some silly jump scare, so because of that you'd think it must be effective, but if you were just playing it alone by yourself you might react much more calmly to it. then there's the difficulty of actually playing it and the confusion of where to go and the sheer boredom of not moving on when you can't do that, which you certainly don't experience as much secondhand, especially when they edit that out.Β
I have to admit though I'm definitely not the target audience for it, seeing as I'm rather insensitive to jump scares, you have to create a certain sense of complete and utter hopelessness and futility to best get at me, generally I'm just too calm to be disturbed or unsettled by anything sudden or jarring, that's why I probably wouldn't like FNAF, at least the first one. yeah the jumpscares made me cringe and move a little back from the screen at first, but that initial shock wears off very quickly. with the second one, having to stop everything to wind that marionette every 3 god damn seconds would probably create some nice tension, and 3rd game has a whole shitlist of things you need to control, but if horror games is all just based around jump scares it won't do much for me.

well I certainly freaking loved Allen Wake, I've had some good fun with Resident evil and dead space from what little I've played, and I'm sure I'd love some silent hill. Did I mention you can shoot things in all of those games? that's kind of a recurring theme here. I'm just a very action-oriented gamer obviously, I want to be people to fight the monsters and have the tension come from being outnumbered/outclassed or running out of ammo and such, rather just being defenseless and having to run away and hide like a chicken (you certainly have to do that sometimes in survival horror too if an enemy is too strong or your resources are stretched too thin, but you have to kill them the majority of the time). that's why amnesia or FNAF just doesn't work for me, the games just couldn't function as they are if you could interrupt chica's jump scare by shoving her away and promptly blowing her head off with a shotgun, but that's internally what I want to do....
alright now I'm suddenly re-imagining the game as a survival horror were you have to rescue someone held hostage in an abandoned theme park full of dilapidated animatronics and freakshow mutants (someone please make this a thing). that's more like how I assumed the gameplay worked at first, it would be like amnesia where you have to do certain security/maintenance tasks at night but instead of hiding from gatherers you to have to hide from patrolling animatronics. I was so disappointed when I found out your stuck in one room the whole time with no freedom of movement...

Why would you get mad about it? I mean if someone's critical of a game you like, either they're being respectfully subjective and saying it's not their cup of tea personally, in which case they're not really even criticizing it so much as saying it doesn't fit their tastes, or they're blatantly attacking it, in which case who gives a crap? I know what games I like and I don't need to justify my choices if someone says its crap, it's not like they're the god of video games and decide whether it ends up in the hall of fame or something. I mean there are so many awful people and disagreeable comments on the Internet it's not worth spending a single second being offended by one. We don't have the same tastes in women exactly and that doesn't offend either of us, I don't see how games are different, especially with horror, that's all based on your personal psychology, views, emotions, and life experiences, so it's about as subjective as it gets. as long as you're civil about it, the more you differ with someone the better I think, because that means you have more to discuss....
as for WHY I like those games when you don't I'm sure the gender difference is apart of it. not to gender stereotype and say that this is ALWAYS the case, but you don't have that natural testosterone-fueled internal hunter instinct like a male would, which probably means you don't enjoy shooting games much unless they're incorporated with other genres (i.e. fallout series), which in turn means you probably don't like those games as much as I do because that makes up a huge portion of the gameplay, the later resi games and dead space 3 especially are lot more about action then the horror aspect. that's why you like FNAF and Amnesia, it does something for you that lighting zombies on fire, cutting vampires in half or running like hell from slashers does for me. likewise I can't enjoy those games much because I'm not personally sensitive to their main form of terrorizing the player much, and that's what they shine at, without that your aren't left with much gameplay wise. At least if Resi or Dead space don't scare me any (which they don't), it's still fun to shoot zombies and mutants to death....Β
