Sten is just a name for a certain class of qunari, and he(they) were in the qunari battle in DA2 u can even get a sten sword dropped.

he got promoted to the rank of Arishok after the current one was killed by Hawke and since he died in an honorable duel Hawke wasn't labelled an enemy of the Qun so Sten didn't go after him/her

it's just stated in one of the Dragon Age books that Sten returned to Qunari lands and became one of the religions leaders, he even had a duel with Alistair and lost to which he stated that he was now his Kadan finally seeing Alistair as a true warrior and an equal
