Lol, I suppose I should elaborate on this a little more.
I am not personally offended by remarks of this nature, mostly because I'm white which means nobody chooses to ask me why I am what I am. However, I do find it unnecessary and kind of racist when people question the choice that artists make regarding skin tone and ethnicity, as if it doesn't make sense for them to be that way. Nothing about Luna or any other character in canon indicates they should be white/black/Asian/Indian/whatever, which is why there are variations of every single humanized pony. It's all up to the artist and what they envision. When someone questions why a humanized pony looks the way s/he looks, it's unnecessary. If you want to comment on clothes, fine -- the clothes don't have feelings, they don't care if you find them distasteful or pretty or whatever. But you wouldn't go up to a black person and ask them why their skin tone is so dark. It's rude and it implies that you think they're inferior or wrong in some way.
All of this isn't necessarily entirely directed at you, although you did ask a question that I don't care for. But I think it's something for everyone involved in fandom to keep in mind.

Their voices suggest white which is what people go off of.

None of them necessarily have distinct accents that suggest anything of the sort, though, other than I guess Zecora. Plenty of people who look non-white speak exactly the same as people who are white. What people are really going off of, as you suggest, are stereotypical whitewashed notions.

TheSpacePhoenix In reply to mistix [2012-05-25 03:28:32 +0000 UTC]
Actually a lot of blacks, hispanics, and other races DO have accents. Such as AJs? Definitely Western. Western = White cowgirl. Rarity? French stuck-up high-class = Fashion-diva probably white french type sound. Pinkie Pie = ... Definitely white, she has the typical little white kid voice, a black kid would have a more slur to their voice and hispanic would have accent. Rainbow Dash = Tomboy, if you look at ALL FICTION, tomboy's are usually white. They NEVER describe a tomboy as black or hispanic. Fluttershy = ...Definitely not a muslim, black, or hispanic voice. Too softspoken and no accent. Twilight = arguably the most diverse sounding but more Asian than black or hispanic.
Now as for the Luna. Sorry but, the Canterlot voice depics royalty and the "ye olde' english" depics European royalty. There were NO black European nobles EVER. There would be NO black people speaking Ye olde' english. And not to look racist or anything but back then blacks were still slaves so Luna being royalty with that hint of personality most definitely would not have been black.

There are people who do have accents, yes. But there are also people who don't. Applejack's accent is Southern, which doesn't say anything about her looks. There are people of all races who speak with a Southern accent. Saying that black people have a "slur" to their voice, or that Hispanic people must have an accent is simply not true, and adheres completely to stereotypes. You even admit that tomboys being white is a stereotype in fiction, yet you still adhere to it. There are plenty of people who are not white that don't like skirts, and that play sports/are more athletic. As far as Luna goes, that's actually not really true? You probably think it is, because European history is extremely whitewashed, but there are plenty of records of black/mulatto people who were nobles/a part of the court. And even if there weren't .... it's a fictional universe where everyone loves each other and lives together in harmony. Come on, dude.
Have you ever met someone whose parents come from another country, but they were born/raised in America, or an English speaking country? Many of them have no accent whatsoever, though their parents do, because they were raised around people who also don't have an accent. Voice is NOT a definite indicator of race in any way, shape, or form. Assuming that all people of a certain non-white race behave/sound in a certain way is just kind of stupid, because not all white people behave or sound the same way either.
Now, if those are the images that those voices evoke for you, then that's fine, and good for you. But that doesn't mean that they're fact, and it certainly doesn't mean that any of the stereotypes you're using as "evidence" are true for all people. If you have to say "not to look racist or anything", then you are probably being racist, and you should really just stop before you say anything more offensive than you already have.

You pretty much summed up what I was probably going to say to that person. I just didn't know how to word it right.
YOUR AWESOMENESS GROWS BY THE DAY <3
Once again I think this is the most beautiful humanization of Luna of all time and if people don't like it cause of the color of her skin then their loss amirite? I'm totally right.
(Also if you ever draw more Luna fanart in the future I can't wait <333)

Can I ask why you choose, artistically, to use that skin tone with her? I've seen a lot of people, recently, when doing human versions of ponies do that. I'm not complaining, I just want to know your rationale.

Canonly, the ponies are all different colors. It only makes sense that they would probably be different skin colors, too. Obviously, everyone has a different idea about what color pony equates to what skin color/nationality/etc. -- this happens to be my personal interpretation.
That being said, with all due respect, I'm not sure there really has to be any reason why I "chose" to do it -- it's just what she is, to me. I didn't really make a conscious choice to make her not white (which is, I'm assuming from your comment, why you're asking this question at all - because you're confused by depictions of ponies that aren't white).

Oh no, that's not it at all. I'm just fascinated with the psychology involved in the depiction of these characters when we reverse engineer their anthropomorphism. I think she looks marvelous with a darker skin tone, from an artistic standpoint.
There may not have to be any reason why you did it, but you did make the choice to do it and I just wanted to know why.
There was no harm or no ill intent in my asking of the question, I'm just fascinated with the psychology of choice.
I truly do apologize if I offended you, it wasn't my intent. I love the piece, I think it's beautiful. Luna has always been my favorite pony from the second episode of the first season and I think this does her character an extremely good credit.

It's not that I'm offended, I mostly just find it annoying and unnecessary how race and skin color is always the topic of debate when it comes to humanized ponies.
Glad to hear I assumed wrong about your intentions though!
