Description This is a Northrop P-61 Black Widow, the first aircraft to be purposely designed as a radar equipped nightfighter. The radar equipment is the reason for the extended nose. Designed in the early forties and influenced heavily by lessons learned by the British on radar equipped fighters, it waswas the largest fighter ever procured for frontline service by the USAF. They were introduced in both Europe and the Pacific almost simultaneously in 1944. Aside from it's designated role as a nightfighter the type also saw action as a night intruder attacking ground targets.

This took ages but it was worth it!

Very nice rendition - is this pen and ink?
I am in the final stages of completing a 1:72 scale model of this aircraft - an ancient Airfix kit. Not the best models on the market any more but good for 'artist model' purposes I have found.

Just my trusty staedler. I'd love a model of this -definitely the best way to get perspective in drawings. Tamiya are my favoritethough any will do for at of course. Your paintings are great great!

Excellent work, and very interesting reading on some of it's Pacific missions...if I could only remember the book?

We had over 2000 aircraft books and magazines in our house when I was growing up. Both my parents were aviation nuts.
Prior to marrying my father, my mother, was dating a guy who worked on the Avro Arrow.

In our house it's predominantly sailing and history books.
Of course! I always forget that you Canadians can call the Arrow your own. Beautiful aircraft, such a pity they were all scrapped.

Wow you really have a great talent for these things!
Looks quite realistic. I also like the light cones from the searchlights in the background.
