Did you extract the .abr file to your photoshop/presets/brushes folder?
Or any folder for that matter. It should work.

IT SEEMS THAT IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE COPY I HAVE OF THE PROGRAM

It's not? What version do you have and what does it say?
I would think that .abr files hould be compatible with every version of photoshop.

Can't you take the imagepack and convert them from there

There's a .jpg file in there, I don't really know anything about GIMP but maybe you could turn those into brushes?
