I donΒ΄t want to spoil the illusion, but I will at least say that the secret lies in using Orthographic view and not the normal Perspective view.

It's not a cube. I'd probably start by making a cube that looked like this and then constraining each red part to its corresponding spheres then start moving the spheres in proportional edit mode. Might not work, but that's where I would start. If you really want to figure it out. Just look at where each object is getting it's light from then you will understand the real shape of it.
