Description You know that feeling? You feel like: Gawd... how can I improve??? And then you look at things you drew some time ago and compare them to your latest drawings and think: Wtf? When did I learn all that?
I´m incredibly glad I finished this one this year. I drew it EVERY YEAR since I started doing digital art. Usually I do it in summer-autumn, but well... december is better than nothing

traditionaly I request crtiques/ helpful comments here, at my anual lion- on the path I´ve taken and the piece itself, which means a lot to me!

Here are the previouse versions:
July 2014:
October 2013:

It´s funny how technique wise this one is a lot closer to the one I did 2013 than the one in 2014...
Reference is the same every year...

This critique was brought to you by a.deviantart.net/avatars/p/r/p… " alt=" " title="ProjectComment" />

I read the other critique and feel thats a fair comment but I;d ofcourse love to add my own two cents as well as say, 'Congrats on not only setting a goal but finishing it!.' I know its hard to keep up with those things because procrastination is my best friend.

Firstly I like that you know where the shadows would go; I can very clearly see where the light source is since you choose to use the brightest shade of white by the mouth and almost along side the black shadow under the muzzle.

While the other comenter mentioned the white patch under the eye I'm on the fence; I see it there because of the fur marking and the hood of the eye is completely black. So I honestly dont feel this is a breaking point.

I like the choice of mottling, I can see a slight greenish tone on the face's fur which to me serves as a 'neutral' tone and connects to the background which is space themed- I see nothing wrong with the space background BUT I for future reference although its not played up here because your focus is the cat - I want to see a more detailed background too.

If you wanted to edit this even more, the dark shadows of black behind the ear and back you could have selected, and colored in with the cosmos background; I would not suggest this for the face area since you are establishing light/dark.

Things I thought were a bit off:
The nose is the correct shape, and I may not have looked at enough Lions but the top of it seems just a lil 'puffy' <----Is completely subjective.

Things I would work on to improve.

The main reason I dont paint digitally or speak a 2nd language well is because I love fine detail. I know how much a pain it is to know the basics but not have the patients or level of knowledge to make those finer adjustments.

Texture is a wonderful thing to bring to your next piece.
You accomplished it slightly with the faint cosmos colors by the chin and upper forehead as well as the brush marks in the mane.

Finer hair strokes/finer details
I'm not saying make this lion look like each section of his mane was combed with a fine brush - Lion's manes sometimes have dreadlocks! Also the whiskers could use another shade ontop of the white to make it more third dimensional; same goes for the inner eyelid of the eye as well as under the eye and nose area.
A good wrinkle on a cat's nose is my favorite!

Final thoughts: 'This actually reminds me of a tie-dye shirt I have with cosmos background and fine flowing mane.'

I hope next year you have even greater success.

WoW! this is what I call a profound critique!
I totally agree! The space background wasn´t even planned... just happened and then it was there and I liked it so I decided to keep it... You´re right about the details... I struggle to find the right amount of details, sometimes it´s just too much and sometimes I should really push it a bit more. Thank you so much! This is so very helpful!!!

(p.s.: hope you don´t mind my rough, second language English )

Wow, what an amazing piece! You've improved so much over the years. The reason why I made the impact and vision all five is because this is a very good piece to show that people can improve their art with time and they don't need to be good to start off with.
Also with vision I think the Value is exquisite! The only things I can draw are animals so I'm trying to improve my art everyday.

Shading is amazing along with the texture of the fur and the style.

Though behind the lion's head I see some of the lights and was just thinking if it would look better without it. Just wondering it it might make it look better with only the lights near the front of the head.

Overall this is amazing and I can't get over how much you've improved over the years! :3

awww... thanks! This is so sweet! If I had showed this to me two years ago I never would have believed it was me, who painted it... It´s so incredible, you look up to all those amazing artists, and sometimes you completely forget how far you´ve come yourself...

I am here from a.deviantart.net/avatars/p/r/p… " alt=" " title="ProjectComment" /> to give you some help! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

To keep it simple:

Likes:

1. The fur texture is wonderful on his mane.
2. The lighting is great!
3. I can see the whiskers! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>
4. This lion is not creepy or eating something or evil looking---wonderful!

Things to consider:

1. This painting really is marvelous, but that white line under his eye---is it a highlight or is that a random white patch on his fur? If it is a highlight, try making it less white next time.

2. Now, this is a bit nit-picky, but I feel there is too much black. Perhaps next time you could put him with a blue sky to lighten the mood? Then again, this does look pretty good with the black... it's up to you in the end.

I am giving your vision a 5 because this is your goal every year---I'm glad you are sticking to your goal!

I am giving your originality a 3.5 because although this is great, there are probably plenty of lion profiles like this.

The technique is a 4 because it is fantastic! You suggested the fur very well!

The impact is a 5 because I am blown away by this whole thing.

Okay, go to a.deviantart.net/avatars/c/c/c… " alt=" " title="ccrazyisme" /> and look for a TRIO.

It's always nice to redo old artwork to check in our progress You did a great job, and you really did improve!! I really like the choice of colors on this one!! The lion really stands out! There isn't much critic I can add to what was said. I can easily identify the light source and the shading makes sense and adds the 3dimensionality to the animal.

I tend to be drawn to the eyes (or notice them) of a subject when I look at the artwork and something seems to be missing. Like a white spot to add some life. That would be the only recommandation but honestly, you did a great job on this one Congrats on your progress and keep on drawing!!

yeah, you´re probably right, I thought the brighter yellow was enough, but it really isn´t ... thanks a lot!

hello there! im coming from ProjectComment !!!
i saw this in the gallery and just HAD to click it (because wowza i love me some lions! <3)
the detail is phenomenal! you can tell where all the shading is in the face, and each small crease is...
the texture on the fur is beautiful and really looks so soft and poofy..!
though, i do feel like the bridge of this big guy's nose could have just a slight hint of fur? it looks a bit
flat. i think overall though maybe a few small strokes of hair here and there on the face would be
good. though, i do know lions have pretty short hair on their faces.. i think maybe just try and add
the hairs where there's creases?
i'unno.. i dont really do much realism but this is just what i thought!!
