The snow froze where she stepped, glittering like a million diamonds in the moonlight.

Painting and Ice base by me
28mm Reaper Miniature Ice Queen by Werner Klocke

If you're wondering where I got the ice for the base, I found some clear plastic beads and crushed them with a hammer. The result was this, which I think makes good ice.

I've been in a winter mood so I decided to paint a miniature to paint this to celebrate the season.

Wow! Awesome effect with the beads. I would have never thought of trying something like that! I'll have to try some experimentation with that (and of course credit you for the idea).

Re: Gale Force 9 "takeout boxes": Does Gale Force 9 still do that? Last time I visited their site to look for the "takeout box" base option, I couldn't find it. I'm almost all the way through my takeout-box of 25mm rounds! It'd be great if I could order more to replenish my supply.

Also, have you posted this to the Reaper forums? Not only is it a great paint job, but I'm sure people would be inspired by your hammer-and-beads crystal base decoration method. It's brilliant!

Thanks, it was fun to smash.... Liz Smash!

I don't know if you can get these from Gale Force nine anymore, someone else asked me too. I got these at Gen Con last year. I would be more then happy to pick you up some next year, I think it was 10$ for a small box. I don't know why they would do away with it, the only thing I can think is it's just not possible to satisfy what people want? I just put a smattering of everything in my box, but tended to pick up more small rounds.

As for Reaper, didn't throw it up there, didn't think about it, but I probable will, now that you mention it. I lurk there occasionally

That was a great idea for the ice. I will totally steal that.

The shade of flesh on the queen is brilliant. It has both the right cool shades to sit perfectly with the snow and ice (despite her lack of clothing) yet the darkness makes her stand out in her own right. Main observations I would make are that the sword blade lacks distinction (hard to know what to suggest to fix that, though) and if you were to add more warmth to the red of her robes it would provide a stronger and more emotive contrast.

Gorgeous work, though. Is that an MDF base you've used?

MiniatureMistress In reply to precinctomega [2012-11-13 16:48:35 +0000 UTC]

The only thing I can think of doing to stop the sword from retreating into the background is to paint it a darker color. I was thinking a black blade, maybe I could add some glyphs to make it pop a little more.

The base is just a flat wood base that Gale Force Nine lets you buy by the Chinese takeout box. I used some miliput epoxy and stuck the beads shards into it. I then used the Woodland scenics snow to cover.

Oh, yeah, I know those takeout boxes: they sell them for peanuts at conventions and suchlike, don't they? There's an online seller here in the UK who does very similar stuff.

I'm thinking they were $10 for half a pint, which means, stuff all the things! I think I got over 50 in the box.

At first I thought these were quartz crystal points.... that would be good for ice too...

The sword is very cool.. nice detail

The plastic looks very cool though.. what kind of plastic item did you break?

Smoothon makes awesome products that you could cast your own ice crystal shapes from. If you or anyone else viewing ever want to check it out...

I took some plastic beads and smashed them, the result was these nice looking shards.

Have you used smooth-on modeling epoxy? I say it listed and wondered about the quality/ detail you can get in a sculpt.

tammyscreations In reply to MiniatureMistress [2012-11-14 23:47:48 +0000 UTC]

no I have not used their apoxy.. but I use Aves [link] it works pretty well. But I use it mostly to create an "under" surface to sculpt on with polymer clay. You can get tons of detail but the working time is pretty quick and everything gets sticky and starts to harden.

But if you sclupt in clay and then cast a mold with smoothon silicone...the details are exact duplicate!
