Character appeal is one of my favorite elements of good art, as it is so visceral, so automatic. It provides that initial "spark" you get when you see a really good piece of character art, like the first bite of a really tasty dish. Yet, at the same time, character appeal is one of the hardest elements of a piece to really analyze and quantify. Because it is so intuitive, many of the reasons why we find something appealing remain locked in the subconscious, taking tremendous time and deep study to understand.
Nevertheless, this piece features some great character appeal, and it's not limited to a single character. We have the boy in the middle and the pig-bunny at his side. Each one's cuteness complements the other, projecting an overall image of cuteness, and the peaceful meadow environment behind him informs us that it is about as innocent as it looks. The one aspect of the image that does conflict with the tone would be the weapon the boy is holding behind his back, yet even that has a goofy hilt that still keeps it playful and only establishes the boy as one capable of fighting. It removes some of his innocence but still keeps him cute, so he feels more like a video game protagonist.
One thing I can say is that Meliodas here is very well drawn and colored. Though he is nearly standing perfectly straight, he has a slight bend in his pose and has one arm reaching for his sword, resulting in a minor curve in the line of action that keeps it interesting. The aforementioned character appeal is also in full effect. Most character appeal resides in the face, and this picture places that face front and center. Between the messy hair, the shining eyes, and the winning smile, this boy is a noseless sight to behold. His body is also wonderfully proportioned between the size of the torso, the legs, the arms, and the head, resulting in an excellent model for a quasi-realistic chibi base. The one exception I would have to note would be the neck, as I find it to be unnaturally thin in relation to the size of the head and the torso underneath it. Even for a chibi, it looks like a pumpkin balancing on a twig.
Meliodas's cute companion also has a fair amount of character appeal, and placing the two in relation to one another adds a compatibility bonus to each of them. The action pose and jumping angle add some more variance and liven up the tone of the image. By having an energetic sidekick beside him, the boy seems calmer and more in control by comparison. I find that Hawk has less visceral appeal overall and more of a childish charm in place of it. Perhaps it's because there's not as much detail on Hawk compared to Meliodas with all the folds in the clothing. Also, the body shape on Hawk looks a little lumpy, and I think Hawk's face is out of alignment based on the direction it is jumping. It feels like the whole face should be moved over to the left. The face itself is pretty well drawn, as well as the ears and hooves. The expression is a little generic, but I can read it as "jolly".
I adore your coloring technique. The lines you used to color and shade each part of the image look so clean and controlled. I particularly like how you did Meliodas's hair and the sky. The yellow glow around the characters is an interesting touch that I'm not sure how to feel about. On the one hand, it matches the border outside the picture. On the other, it makes me question if they are actually supposed to be glowing.
Great job on the detail in the background, and your method of drawing clothing is super realistic and well-done. I noticed that you sneakily hid the majority of hands and feet in this image and got away with only drawing one. You did a great job with the one hand in the image, so I'm led to believe it's not because you find them too difficult to draw. Be sure to try your hardest to master the areas of study that you find most difficult. Best of luck with your future commissions and make the most!

This pig's expression is the best thing about this to me! It's so happy!
Actually, this has a care-free feeling overall. The light colors, open sky, and relaxed poses add to the expression. I also like how subtle the clouds are. You say you're not happy with how it turned out but I think it's great. I don't use copic markers, so if there mistakes there I can't really tell. One thing I would suggest drawing-wise is leaving the other hand in sight for next time. I know how tempting it is to hide it (and the feet), but even a fist on the hip would add to the communication a lot.Β
