Ha! Right on the coast, they are usually always in cloud or mist. It is quite a unique environment here, different to most of New Zealand..

The Pahautea is a native cedar and is usually only found between 250m and 1200m in the rain forests. I guess because it is mostly in the mist will be why it grows so close to sea level.. The West Coast of the South Island is the only place this happens in New Zealand..

So its a water mist addicted tree. Also if the mist is often then its just like the east coast of iceland when the fjords fills with mist and clouds.

The further south you go here the wetter it gets. At the bottom of the south island is an area called Fiordland which looks similar to the fjords in your part of the world. Down there they have 7-10m of rain a year, sometimes alot more! Where I live we have 4m a year but a place just 30kms south of here had a record 14m one year with 1.8m of rain in just 2 days!! It has been known to rain here for 6 weeks without stopping once!!
