Description Conceptual Oviraptor
Mostly feeding on vegetation, fruits, berries, nuts and other foliage though it is an Omnivore and will feed on other eggs, small lizards, rodents and other scurrying animals. On its back are crown striped grooming birds that graze and forage the thick coat of hair-like feathers that cascade and protect the back. Usually large insects and moss-like plants rich with nutrients can be found hidden

Great conception! An idea really aligned with the most modern comcepts! There are no more doubts dinos had got feathers!

Congrats. May I use your draw in my blogs and presentations? (I am a Brazilian geologist).

yes, similar to a t-rex though, they are quite small in proportion and have only 2 taloned/nail digits mostly meant for mating

Very nice, I like this species where would it be found?

Regions of Australia, perhaps prehistoric or just a variation of modern evolution, different modern day species similar to the ostrich, cassowary, emu..

Thanks in retrospect. I realize I should have given them long thin beaks for grooming and picking out any insects or food sources within the dense fur and not berry/nut cracking beaks like parrots. I was almost going to turn them into baby versions of this design.

Wow, I've never noticed that even your digital sketches look fantastic. I'll have to keep an eye out if you ever post WIPs of your digital sketches, I'd love to see how you built those up

Thanks, yea I sketch digitally fairly often.. not as much as traditionally because I usually use pencil sketches or pen as the base for my final digital paintings but if I'm just fooling around or doodling b&w in photoshop I'll produce it digitally start to finish. I should record a time lapse of one when I have time.

For some reason this creature looks fun to ride (probably just me playing too much Final Fantasy). Nice to see a twist on what you'd expect an Oviraptor to look like

Thanks. I didn't do much research in terms of the info I included but I was basically fooling around with oviraptors/terror birds, ratites etc... a warm up exercise. Glad you like it.

tootally inaccurate but its one awesome design!
Seriously! This looks like it'd be the more present day oviraptor, like it'd be a direct brother of the cassowary.

BrooksLeibee In reply to MIKECORRIERO [2011-08-17 14:29:42 +0000 UTC]

alright, totally legit.
tell you the truth this is probably what it would look like if the species became more evolutionized.
Hell maybe they are cassowaries who knows. XD

MIKECORRIERO In reply to BrooksLeibee [2011-08-17 22:21:22 +0000 UTC]

I just wish we had more ratites, larger species, more colorful species and types with crests on the head like the southern cassowary. Terror birds to me would almost be more awesome to see than a large raptor dinosaur. I think it's just easier to imagine them since large flightless birds like the ostrich, emu and cassowary are still around. I think I was shooting for something more like the moa in terms of a smaller head with large heavy feet in proportions but with design elements similar to the cassowary and some other birds of flight like the helmeted hornbill. I could draw/paint ratites/terror birds and oviraptors all day.. too much fun.

BrooksLeibee In reply to MIKECORRIERO [2011-08-17 23:45:49 +0000 UTC]

I would like to see a terror bird too, no lie.
The variety sucks these days XD.
They do seem like fun critters to draw, with all of the varieties of how they could have looked, imagination goes insane with them, including the oviraptors!
With them it could be mostly crest detail/fur/feather details that would have the most variety to them.

Hmm, I never really thought of what an Oviraptor would look like with feathers; reminds me of a cross between a Moa and a Cassowary. This one appears to be missing his/her tail though, or was that intentional?

Either way, cool concept.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MIKECORRIERO In reply to KatePfeilschiefter [2011-08-17 07:03:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Katie, A lot of different birds influenced the design, the Southern Cassowary probably more heavily referenced for the body than anything else. The lack of a tail was intentional. It's more of an oviraptor meets terrorbird. It started out as a warm up sketch and then I just took it slightly further so not too much thought went into the plausibility of the design or name/info.
