Description
A city is ever-changing. Every construction starts with destruction. And, for a moment, there's no city at all.

This photo is part of Capturing Change, a DeviantArt collaborative assignment, in association with SONY, to take four photographers from DA to document changes in their cities and cultures. I was fortunate to be one of them.

São Joaquim, Brazil
The most experience photographer of the group, Miguel has been a photographer for over 15 years, starting with a film camera and then moving to digital five years later. With the goal of featuring the past, present, and future of Brazil in this project, he traveled to smaller and lesser-known cities to capture the beauty and the chaos withi

I hadn't been in Laguna for almost a year and was surprised to find the old center completely turned to rubble. The change from old to new in Laguna has impacted heavily in the daily life of its citizens, who have no idea how long this revolution will last. Everyone hopes it's worth it.

I chose Laguna to represent an old town now being converted to a new city. The changes are brutal and you see past, present and future in every corner. I was a bit shocked by how much the old town had changed in so little time. But, a city is ever-changing and that's a fact.

Laguna.
Santa Catarina, Brazil.

THE SHOOT

This was shot around noon, as I was walking around the center of old town, now most of it just rubble. Thought I'd make simple, postcard-like shots to document the ongoing works. It was then I found this wall with LAGUNA written and everything crumbling besides it. The backhoe was a bonus -- the operator jumped in and drove it away in a split second, so I got to capture it as it manoeuvred away.

Most likely, yes... and many others like it, unfortunately. That's the price of ignoring history and the greed of building a new city.
