Description Late Cretaceous, North Africa

An image inspired by the recent paper by Dr. David Hone and Dr. Thomas Holtz, Jr., "Evaluating the ecology of Spinosaurus: shoreline generalist or aquatic pursuit specialist?" published in Palaeontologia Electronica, January 2021:

I tried to depict the Spinosaurus here using its sail both for intraspecific display and to cast shadows on the water as some modern herons and egrets do in a behavior known as "canopy feeding". Above, a large azhdarchid and two ornithocheirid pterosaurs cruise by, and in the water a Neoceratodus lungfish is about to become the next meal for the Spinosaurus.

Dr. Hone has a great podcast, in which you can learn more about the history and current ideas about Spinosaurus:

I question why did they use Genya's reconstruction over Auditore's, it's proportions don't really follow what is currently known on Spinosaurus. I heavily doubt this wading lifestyle of Spinosaurus, despite claiming otherwise, the current evidence does not fully support their hypothesis, such as this:

β€’ They failed to mention the high bone density of 1.05 which is similar to Crocodilians cited in Larramendi (2020).

β€’ Laramendi (2020) also talk at length about disproving Henderson (2018), and determined Spinosaurus was just fine being stable in water.

β€’ They also never cited the wide, barrel shaped torso Spinosaurus had, as cited in Stromer's original description and and Ibrahim (2014).

β€’ They furthermore seem to the downplay the hindlimbs, stating it's "strong enough" when analysis of the bones says otherwise.

These are just the issues off the top of my head. The paper is very flawed.

β€’ They seem to have forgotten about the robust tail base which would have given enough power to allow for slow but constant swimming.
