It's hard for me to look at her and see a malevolent smile. To me it looks more like a timid/innocent expression.~
The look in her eyes kind of tells me that she's just seen something that either made her happy or emotive, so she smiles in a more introverted manner, which can sometimes be perceived as malicious or sarcastic (as an introvert myself, I understand how it feels haha).

Oh definitely! Emotion perception can vary greatly from person to person. And whenever an expression is more neutral, how you perceive its subtleties will most likely be influenced by your emotions and personality (at the time, or in general). There are a lot of times that I'm feeling happy, but am still told to have a resting bitch face hah.
