I dunno how much i can tell you about how to make things look good, but I know the program XD

Well i have photoshop, i was using mariana's sai on her pc when i visited

Heh...Well, I brought my tablet with me on my trip so I could keep drawing. I learned a shitload these past two weeks, probably more than I learned in the past few months combined XD
Oh! I use photoshop for most of my digital paints (The really serious ones anyway, like face studies or school.) You just have so much more control. Sai is nice for fun little things like this pic because of the auto-blend, however on my detailed things I find it gets in the way too much 
I have a SHIT load of resources for photoshop if you wish, though one of them is an archived 4chan thread so it has some questionable content. Start with this at the very least though: [link]
Also, I think you might want to try sketching on the tablet (if you aren't already) because it'll probably help gain more control when using it. I know it's really really awkward though XD Just gotta keep doin' it till it feels normal :T Took me like a good few weeks before i felt i could sketch remotely like I could with paper.

hmm well photoshop is the most "common" system i would say, but i really did like the color blend and pressure sensitivity when using it. i MAYYY be wrong about this but it feels like photoshop has more possibilites though? if you learn the program correctly it seems like one could achieve alot of amazing pieces.

Actually, I did XD I started drawing animals and stuff so it gave me a good idea of the basic anatomy.
Photoshop does have WAY more versatility with all the filters layer effects tools and masks. However, it doesn't have any sort of auto-blend algorithm and it's lineart is just flat out not as smooth. I like it more for digital painting (at least for realisitic photo-copy/school ones) but I think Sai is better for works with a lineart or for more colorful and fun paints. It's all preference in the end though XD I think the best thing to do would to use both is some way.

lol i sure was in for a big shock when i found it :T and anons can be just as hateful on tumblr as well i think it's just trolls ( the mean ones anyway) that are all over the internet that can be serious dicks. hmm that's good i'll check it out. i'm just scared that my parents will be like " maggie what the fuck are you looking at?!?!?!?!" but that aside i'm sure the tutorials will help.

Yeah, we all sort of do xD I am starting to move out of it by doing more realistic face studies and stuff, but it's influence is still MASSIVELY apparent. Our perceptions are skewed though, so it's tough for us to really make that call. My parents are the same way.
I typically do one layer for sketch, one layer for underpaint, and then one layer for over paint, however this time I just sketched and then threw the colors right on top XD Thanks! I think I will...

Eh. Classes give you an incentive (the grade) to do work, but you can realism grind on your own. That's what I do most of the time :T
Yeah, there are some AMAZING artists that just use one layer, though they can do all of that with real paints which obviously only has one layer XD I really need to learn to paint beyond watercolours
