Description The first time I ever saw Nico Robin was in my imported Japanese version of One Piece Grand Battle 3 for the PS2. That game covers the Skypiea arc, but at the time, I was still reading One Piece monthly in Shonen Jump, so I didn't even know who Sanji was yet. I knew we'd meet him and Chopper and Robin at some point, but I didn't know anything about who they were. When I started watching the anime through the Alabasta arc, I realized I'd unknowingly spoiled myself; Robin was introduced as a bad guy. Her joining the Straw Hats was kind of a twist and I'd ruined it for myself without even realizing.

All the same, I didn't really care for her at first. She was tough to use in the game and in the anime her cool demeanor didn't seem to jive with the rest of the crew, even if the way she won most of them over was hilarious. But like Zoro, I was wary of her at first.

Then Enies Lobby happened. And we all got to see the lengths Robin was willing to go to to protect the Strawhats, and the lengths the Strawhats were willing to go to to rescue her. We finally got to see her gut-wrenchingly tragic past and we got to finally wrap our minds around this Robin character. And just like that, she jumped straight through the ranks from my least favorite Strawhat to my third-favorite (after Zoro and Franky), where she's remained to this day.

And it's worth mentioning that my favorite moment in all of One Piece isn't an action scene or a gag or a dramatic reveal. My favorite scene in my favorite comic of all time is still Robin, tears streaming down her face, admitting for the first time in her life that she wants to go on living. That's the scene that made me fall in love with Robin, and the scene that made me realize just what a master storyteller Oda really is.

I discovered Robin during the Enies Lobby arc back in 2005 which was what got me into One piece in the first place due to the intense action and story. In fact, had it not been for Robin, I wouldn't be a One piece fan right now.

Thank you Robin! Thank you for getting me into one piece and also for getting me back into a hobby that I had long left behind in my high school years only to return to it in 2007 and enjoying every minute of it.

I also knew about Robin becoming part of the crew before watching the Alabasta arc, but I started watching One Piece very late too, (2008) so I had already seen her face everywhere together with the strawhats, haha XD

The part where she says she wants to live is one of my favorites too! Can't see that shit and not tear up/cry XD

Excellent drawing! Love all the positions you gave the hands

I'm starting to notice a pattern here: everybody discovered Robin before reading Alabasta. XD

speaks truths: While I already knew what One Piece was, I didn't get back into it until after playing Grand Battle Rush at Otakon 2005. Best decision I've ever made.

While I can't imagine the Straw Hats WITHOUT Robin, which is what things were looking to become during Water 7/Enies Lobby, I would always question why she stuck around if she wasn't going to deal with the odd personalities of her crewmates. But after said arcs, and understandably so since she had seemed to become such a freer (wow, that really IS a word) person, she really started to open up.

I mean, she wouldn't do the DOCKING, but she still has her charm. The way she always imagines the most horribly gruesome kind of outcome to a situation (to which all around her tell her to knock it off) is amusing.

The timeskip also opened the door to ways her Devil Fruit could be used that I always believed she was capable of doing if she had the time to prepare. And Luffy gave his crew that time after what happened at Saboady. Once I saw that she was now capable of splitting herself into TWO Robins, among other things, I was like "THERE you go!"

I may mock her relentlessly, if only to play up the "Heel Commentator" character and get a rise out of "Face Commentator" Mankey, but I'm a weird specimen: I only do that to characters I really like.

And I like Robin.

Even if she is a brick sometimes.

Robin refusing to take part in docking is, I think, her funniest moment. And her bleak take on the world is as funny as it is heartbreaking, given her backstory. I was especially amused by her proposed name for Sunny.

And aren't four of the Strawhats "bricks?"

Naw, man, Nami's made more than enough funny faces to make up for it. XD

In all seriousness, I understand there are some things that are not meant to happen. I saw that one Billy & Mandy where Mandy actually smiled and what came of it. I just like giving her (and by extension Mankey) a hard time.

Sorry, you've lost me. Robin's no Mandy, she actually smiles quite a lot now! I know she doesn't do the really crazy cartoon reactions like the rest of 'em, but is that what you mean by "brick?"

...'cause I was makin' the joke that she and three other Strawhats would sink like one. XD

Yeah, not the Devil Fruit weakness, her being the level-headed one in a pack of lunatics like the Straw Hats. I give her a hard time because she's flat out (and flatly) told them to stop doing what they do on occasion (the DOCKING, Franky being in Chopper's body even though that wasn't his fault XD).

Hell, I'm surprised she didn't throw her hands (all million of them! AHCHA!) in the air at the first sight of Franky's new body! Guess the joy of seeing an old friend after two years won over.

Funny enough, my discovery of Nico Robin was simliar to yours. Not COMPLETELY, but can vouch for me on this one...

During Otakon 2005, I saw Robin for the first time in One Piece: Grand Battle Rush when everyone was playing it in Alan's hotel room. Second I saw Robin, I was INSTANTLY in love and wanted to know more about her. I hadn't watched even the series yet until I saw her and the game in action.

So even though I was spoiled by the fact she would join the Straw Hats, I enjoyed seeing every second Robin was on the screen. For a good while, when they were leaving Alabasta, I was going about worrying they left her behind! Imagine my delight when she stowed away their ship. XD

And Enies Lobby was the hardest arc for me on an emotional scale, because her backstory was the ONLY one that made me sob like a child. It made me care so much about why it was important that she needed to be rescued and accomplish her dream with the Straw Hats. Not to mention I was raging so hardcore at all the abuse Spandam was giving her. To this day, I don't think there's anyone I've hated more than him for taking so many cheap shots at Robin. (Akainu and Blackbeard aside, naturally.)

But yeah, I've always loved Robin, and I probably will never STOP loving her as long as she and the series are around.

Wow, really!? I felt the same way about her backstory as well since I thought it was the saddest of all the SH's backstories. ;_;

And yeah, I also hated that prick Spandam because of what he did to Robin.
