History
EARLY LIFE: Aspenpaw’s early life was fairly eventful; most of the time, she and her littermates were average bundles of fluff that played pretend battle with each other. Her mother, Aspenheart, died of blood loss while giving birth to her and her two sisters, Sandkit and Featherkit. Aspenkit was named after her mother due to being a spitting image of her. Dustcloud, her father, loved his kits so strongly that it almost made up for the fact that they had no mother. But, on the day that Sandkit, Featherkit, and Aspenkit became apprentices, Dustcloud vanished from the clan and was not seen again. The three sisters grieved their father’s disappearance and the assumed him to be dead. For many moons, they felt a leaden ball of grief in their chest, but the pain eventually subsided to a dull ache and they focused on training. Not three moons after Dustcloud’s death, Sandpaw died of an infected thorn scratch. Her sister’s death distracted Featherpaw and, during a hunting session, she fell from a tree and broke her spine trying to catch a squirrel. Aspenpaw spent countless days alone in the forest, grieving for her lost family. With the support of her clanmates, though, she recovered and set her sights on being clan deputy one day.

Bravepaw was so ecstatic to join the Gathering patrol! He was even more excited that he got to go with his littermates this time; the past few times he'd attended, he'd always been alone despite having a few friends. The dark-furred apprentice wondered what would happen tonight. He'd hoped to meet up with some familiar faces, but he decided that he'd branch out and force himself to share tongues with a stranger. His mentor was always telling him to open himself up to new challenges – and tonight was that night.
As cats mingled and piled around him, he turned his head as he caught the whiff of an unfamiliar scent – ShadowClan. Narrowing his blue-green eyes at the patrol's silhouette, he distinctly remembered stories about how a ShadowClan cat had killed a ThunderClan apprentice not too long ago when a battle arose. He was sure there were some nice cats, but he'd rather not have his ears torn off, thank you very much.

Aspenpaw padded beside her mentor, Flintheart, struggling to keep still. She couldn't wait to share tongues with the other clans' apprentices! Despite her wary exterior, the little she-cat absolutely loved meeting new felines. At a signal from Applestar, the ShadowClan patrol scattered, leaving Aspenpaw to sit beside some unknown faces. As the musky scent of ThunderClan hit her tongue, she recalled a recent battle where one of their apprentices had been killed by a ShadowClan cat. A shiver shot up her spine and she scooted away from them, fearful that accusatory yowls might follow her. Aspenpaw settled into a sitting position at the edge of the clearing, the full moon turning her fur a glimmering silver. It almost seemed as if she were made of stars themselves.

The apprentice relished the coolness of the night air – his dark fur did little to keep the heat away. He'd always have to hunt or train underneath the shade, much to the annoyance of his mentor. He was just enjoying the empty spot he'd found away from most of the cats until a waft of ShadowClan scent found its way beside him, and he turned his head to stare at a pale tabby she-cat who looked around his own age.

She turned her face to Silverpelt, murmuring a soft prayer with her golden eyes reflecting the heavenly bodies.
"Aspenheart, Sandpaw, Featherpaw, Dustcloud... Watch over my clan and keep them safe. I beg of you..." Her voice was barely a whisper. Suddenly, RiverClan scent bathed her muzzle and her fur bristled with apprehension, her gaze darting around to find the source. A pair of turquoise eyes flashed in the dark, and she barely made out the shape of a black-furred tom, who was looking at her.

Narrowing his blue-green eyes, Bravepaw sat and continued to stare as the she-cat mumbled at the night sky. He'd never really seen any cat pray to StarClan other than after a catch, and her actions intrigued him. The apprentice's ears flattened as she stiffened and turned to look at him, and he quickly wet his paw and continued grooming himself, now focusing on his face. He felt an angry blush rise to his cheeks – though he was thankful that no cat would be able to notice due to his dark fur. He couldn't believe how silly he was to stare!

Her amber, sap-like eyes stayed on him as she rose to her paws, her long tail waving back and forth like a snake.
"Who's there?" she called in the direction of the cat - she thought it was an apprentice - with a flick of her ears. Her voice was calm and friendly, but had a slight edge of wariness to it. The young female's white whiskers twitched as she waited for a response.

Tail flicking at the sound of the she-cat's voice, Bravepaw slowly turned his head and dipped it after a moment of analysing the she-cat's facial features. She seemed cautious of him; was she scared? Why else would a cat call out to know what was there?
"Hello," he meowed to her. "I'm Bravepaw."

"You're ThunderClan, are you not?" She whispered, her gaze sharp with apprehension, "Aren't you going to start hissing at me? After all, one of my clanmates killed one of your apprentices." The pale-furred apprentice decided only to tell him her name if he treated her with decency, unlike some of the other Thunderclanners.

Bravepaw flicked his ears in confusion; couldn't the she-cat tell he was a RiverClanner? He'd heard nasty comments from the other Clans about how 'fishy' RiverClan cats smelled. He was pretty surprised that she couldn't recognise the distinct scent.
"No, I'm from RiverClan..." he muttered quietly, his ears slowly going back against towards his head at the she-cat's hostility. He was probably right about there being no nice cats in ShadowClan. "The battle between your Clan and ThunderClan isn't any of my business unless and until you attack us." he added bluntly.

"W-what?" Aspenpaw spluttered, her tail bristling in surprise, "I-I knew that!" After a moment of awkward silence, she let out a sigh.
"I'm sorry, I was being rude... My name's Aspenpaw, it's good to meet you." The little cat's ears and tail were lowered.

Amusedly, Bravepaw's thick tail kinked at Aspenpaw's stammering, and he dipped his head respectfully to her, waving his tail in greeting. "It's alright," he replied, giving her a small and quick smile. "I heard that your Clan lost a Clanmate as well. I'm sorry about that."

"We lost a lot of kits... all of my half-siblings, and one of my littermates." he brought up for no good reason. Maybe Aspenpaw would find consolation in RiverClan's loss, even if they were kits. Bravepaw was only sad that his Clan had lost four potential warriors before they could grow up to see their future.

With only slight hesitation, she stretched her tail forward and rested the tip on his paw.
"I'm sorry," Aspenpaw murmured, her gaze hollow, "I know how it feels to lose family. My mother died when I was born, so I never knew her. A few moons later, my sister, Sandpaw, died of an infected scratch. Then my other sister..." She swallowed, hard, against the lump in her throat before continuing, "M-my other sister, Featherpaw, broke her spine falling from a tree..."

Bravepaw leaned back in surprise at the gentle touch of the other apprentice's tail on his paw, but didn't pull away as the pale tabby's eyes seemed to start watering. The poor thing... he was pretty lucky to have lost his family before he could really digest what had happened.
"I'm very sorry for your loss," he gently added again, brushing his tail on hers momentarily. "But I suppose that's the price we pay for Clan life... my friend lost his hearing to a fox, but he saved his patrol." the dark-furred apprentice mentioned. Despite his grief for Ashpool's hearing, he found pride in his sacrifice. The Clan always came first.

She raised her eyes back to his and nodded lightly, clearing the storm that clouded her eyes.
"Thank you," the little she-cat meowed, "And yes, I suppose you're right... Wow, your friend actually lost his hearing? Did the fox bite his ears off?" Curiosity sparkled in her sap-colored eyes.

Flicking his ears, Bravepaw frowned. He actually really had no idea what happened to Ashpool – his ears were still intact. Perhaps he was traumatised... but older warriors had fought against foxes before and came back with more severe injuries, and they seemed fine.
Not wanting to reveal too much about RiverClan's cats to the ShadowClan apprentice, Bravepaw nodded after a moment's hesitation. Ashpool would probably never want to go to another Gathering again; there was no harm in telling Aspenpaw what she wanted to hear. "Um, yeah..."

"Huh," she huffed, her gaze thoughtful, "I'd like to meet him someday! He sounds like a pretty unique cat!" It was only then that Aspenpaw wondered if she was being to inquisitive. Oops... Her ears twitched at him in an apologetic way.

Bravepaw wiggled his toes uncomfortably at Aspenpaw's blatant outburst, but he understood that she'd probably never seen a cat with no ears before. "Maybe," he mewed back, letting out a short, nervous chortle. "Aren't there any strange cats in your Clan?" he asked instead, curious about ShadowClan. The only stories he'd really heard about the mysterious cats were that they were battle-hungry night-dwellers, but this pretty tabby made Bravepaw rethink his first impressions.
