Lone Wolf & Cub was a classic B&W manga about Ogami Itto, "the baby-cart assassin"--fiction based around the life & legends of a real historical figure.
Serious & well-drawn stories of thought and action and depth, with a good number of storylines revolving around different questions of how one resolves conflicting priorities of honor and deal with the inevitability of loss and death.
