Description I took a few sittings to finish this because I was really not in the mood, but I'm so glad I finally finished it!
I feel like I've finally figured out on a style, and have decided that I really can't work with bright colours (ha).
I came up with this piece while feeling lost, her holding a lantern kind of signifying trying to find a way back somewhere.

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

1. What we see.
Artwork shows a young girl holding a lantern, staring into a space ahead. Her pose suggest she is insecure and a bit troubled. The abstract background reminds some wheat field or scratched wall eventually.

2. Analysis.
There is a simple yet strong central composition. There are three point of focus in this picture. First, obviously, the face (especially beautiful eyes). Second is the well painted hand which has more detail and contrast than the surroundings. Third one is the candle - the brigthest point in the picture.
Analogous colors (browns, low saturated oranges and yellows) makes a good harmony and brings here some calm.
There is a nice contrast in texture between the character (smooth) and the background (rough). Also the shapes, lines and edges in the character are mostly smooth (well done wavy hair, dress folds) while the background strokes makes "movement" and in this case sense of danger.

3. Constructive thoughts.
There are two sources of light in this picture. The lantern and the environment lighting. Both sources are equally strong and has same colour. I would suggest to make the lantern lighting stronger and more yellow/red, while the environment light more cold and much weaker in intensity. So the areas not lit by lantern will become darker. Light will be more consistent. This would give the scene more contrast overall and give some more depth - for example make the background darker which brings out the character.

4. Successful or not.
I think the art is successful in this case - it shows what te artist intended - the feeling of lost. For me personally, what really sells this art are the beautifully painted face and hand. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Nice! IMHO there is more "impact" now.

The background is much darker now (so my critique isn`t working anymore ; ) ). Im wondering if it would be better to add subtle rimlight to the dress and hair. So the character will stand out more.

Now her edges are lost - which is not bad in any way. She appears only where the lighting is, this setup gives more intimacy to the picture.

With rimlight she will sand out more which could give more of "alone" feeling.

Its up to You. Great work anyway : )

Really dig the overall mood you've set with this painting; its very consistent and I like how you've managed to suggest nighttime without using very much dark at all.

Thank you! Yeah, originally i wanted to do a lot of heavy shading to show some chiaroscuro but it was incredibly dark and you could barely see details. And i figured, a lantern in a dim room would give a really nice glow.
