Description Oil on 16x20" Canvas, self-portrait and dog.

This was my final project for Painting I, and I thought it was rather appropriate. A friend of mine from the same class was doing a series of her cat and I promised her I'd paint my dog so she wouldn't feel like the only pet-obsessed student, which she's not

I really like how the hair turned out, on the dog as well as the girl. I feel like the nose isn't wide enough and the angle is slightly strange, but the colors are great.

Actually, the girl in the picture is me and it looks quite like me in my younger years. A lot of people have said that my face doesn't look right, but even after three or four years since completing this piece, I still think it looks like me. Maybe I just look odd.

Septdeneuf In reply to meiken [2009-03-02 13:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Well I guess then, it's your nose's fault.(: But I think it most looks like this, because the edge of the dog continues the line of the nose and makes it look kind of lond and sharp in continuation.

Brilliant picture, I like the depth in it and the look on the dogs face you've captured is marvelous, it doesn't look totally comfortable with the situationXD fantastic work, very real feel to it!

The way you painted your dog is amazing, I would just be careful about different textures because the brush strokes on the face are very similar to the ones on the dog's fur.

Oh, how sweet - is that a Shi Tsu, or a Cavalier? I need to brush up on my dog breeds. I love those brushstrokes... Amazing work!

Thank you so much! He's a Shih Tzu. Don't worry. I'm not too great at distinguishing any breed I haven't owned.

The puppy is just so wonderfully done, and the face is superb. But what is most striking is the green eye and the feelings you captured within it, really gives this piece a spirit of its own

Hey.. you just submited this on storm-artists didn't you? It's on the frontpage right now

It's a realy good painting. I just feel like the area of the girls(you?) forhead is a little too yellow. Not realy important, just something I noticed.

meiken In reply to Segundus [2008-01-06 15:28:42 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree with you. I was studying under an artist that stressed warm foreheads and cool jawlines in portraits. It's something that I've since then scrapped because I don't think it works for me, but I do see what you're talking about.

And yes I did.

Segundus In reply to meiken [2008-01-07 16:38:31 +0000 UTC]

Realy.. Did he/she give any reasons as to why it should be like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meiken In reply to Segundus [2008-01-07 17:27:27 +0000 UTC]

That the forehead appears warmer than the jawline. It's about how the light hits the subject and the amount of blood that shows through the skin in those areas versus how thick the skin is. It really worked for her portraits, but it just seems too exaggerated in mine.

Segundus In reply to meiken [2008-01-08 15:26:16 +0000 UTC]

Huh.. Pretty logical answer If I'd botherd to think long and hard enought on it I may have figured that out myself.. Or not...

I bet with enough experimentation and practise you'll be able to make it work just as good as she does. It's a pretty awesome portrait anyway!

meiken In reply to Segundus [2008-01-08 18:53:39 +0000 UTC]

Eh, it's not so much that. I don't think I want to follow her style specifically. I want to develop my own. But thank you!

Very lovely overall. The painting turned out quite nicely considering the medium used here. The brush strokes look very good, especially those that make up the realistic looking dog. The euphoric facial expression is definitely pleasant to look at.

Beautiful painting. The brush-strokes you used on the dog make it look so realistic. Good job with colors and shading/shadowing/highlights. Some parts are a tiny bit out of proportion. Otherwise, nicely done.

Thank you! All of my friends have dubbed my dog the ewok of the family. I can't tell you the number of times I've been told that, but I love hearing it every time It's hilarious.

Thank you again!
