I cringe at the thought of having to do a charcoal piece, but this is awesome. Love the flowers.

PERFECT.
This may be because im partial to roses, but i think this may be one of the best in your gallery. The lighting is magnificant, and the shading is phenomonal. Amazing job! well done!! fav!

GollumSmeagol [2006-04-26 01:19:49 +0000 UTC]

Wow, this looks great! The rose on the left is very realistic. Although - are you going to fill in the whole background with black? Because just the black strip makes it bit unbalanced. Otherwise, great job...roses are SO hard to draw xD

lovely roses
did you draw this ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meiken In reply to K3da [2006-04-12 03:06:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, in a sense. The technique was more painting than drawing, as a charcoal wash involves getting a brush wet and running it over charcoal sticks to get pigment on the brush. You then apply it to the canvas and quickly use another wet brush to spread it out.

Thank you

How do you do it?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meiken In reply to PhoenixsAshes [2006-04-11 00:14:55 +0000 UTC]

Basically take a stick of charcoal, get the paintbrush very wet, and dab it on the charcoal. It's mostly about layering, and if you keep the paper wet, you can make it gradate really well.

meiken In reply to krista07pa [2006-04-10 23:41:16 +0000 UTC]

It's basically painting with charcoal as if they were watercolor.

I feel like this would have been better without those pitch-black places in the flowers. None the less, skillfully done indeed

meiken In reply to Exzachly [2006-04-05 22:40:25 +0000 UTC]

THe focus for this exersize was control and contrast, so I had to go that deep. Thanks for the comment though!
