I really loved the episode. x3 Somehow deep down before this came out I had known he would  have to do something with an owl...because even without the costume he looked like one, and there is an owl picture in his office. XD By the way, he reminded me so much of Asgore, so I started humming Bergentrückung as soon as I saw him. XD Hoot hoot...x3

Nope, I only watched this one episode. =') I'm still lagged behind...(by the way in the Hungarian version a Miraculous is not translated as 'totem', but as 'talisman'... just a small fun fact )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Macbow333 In reply to Aliana-chan [2018-01-03 01:46:03 +0000 UTC]

It was a pretty good episode though. Do you think they knew their friends' secrets before this episode?

Interesting thing about totem vs talisman...

I looked up talisman in the english dictionary and saw these two definitions:

1) an object held to act as a charm to avert evil and bring good fortune

2) something producing apparently magical or miraculous effects

If they're trying to mean the first definition when talking about the objects the akumas inhabit, I think they may be missing the mark (unless it's Papillon who's missing the mark by using them for evil like Nooroo told him not to do). If they're trying to mean the second definition, then that's a little closer to the truth, but still not quite what an akuma inhabited object is since it's the Miraculous (or kwami) that that is the true source of the magical effects.

The relevant definition of totem that I found was this:

an object (such as an animal or plant) serving as the emblem of a family or clan and often as a reminder of its ancestry; also : a usually carved or painted representation of such an object

Based off this definition, maybe totem isn't the right word either...

Here's what I found when looking for amulet:

a charm (such as an ornament) often inscribed with a magic incantation or symbol to aid the wearer or protect against evil (such as disease or witchcraft)

Just for the sake of looking, I looked up fetish and found another relevant definition:

an object (such as a small stone carving of an animal) believed to have magical power to protect or aid its owner; broadly : a material object regarded with superstitious or extravagant trust or reverence

And in general, here's a few definitions of charm that are relevant to ML:

1 a) the chanting or reciting of a magic spell

1 b) a practice or expression believed to have magic power

2) something worn about the person to ward off evil or ensure good fortune

Ultimately, all of these point to the fact that Hawkmoth is doing the whole "Miraculous Magic" thing wrong. Still, none of them quite match up with what a miraculous, kwami, or akuma inhabited object are.

Oh heck, I see I have messed this up...Children, never write an intellectual comment to your friend after 3 a.m. .
So, I meant: their Miraculouses were translated as "talismans", according to the Hungarian dub.
The totem has no name. o.o

Probably because it would sound strange in my language, though I don't really think so. Translators tend to like 'Hungarianizing' some words to make it a bit more understandable.

Is the show still at least effectively called "Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir" in Hungarian?

You are going to laugh, but it is! Miraculous: Katicabogár és Fekete Macska Kalandjai, as it is called in Hungarian. As you can read/see, the heroes' names got Hungarianized too. Papillon's name is cool but weird, and it is just an indirect reference to a certain moth (I grew up with a book about butterflies...). And it is very funny when the voice actors are pronouncing certain civilian names differently within the same episode xDDD Simon Sayz was a good example.

Macbow333 In reply to Aliana-chan [2018-05-01 06:25:29 +0000 UTC]

Ha! At least they kept that little part in. I'm not surprised they kept the butterfly/moth reference in "The Butterfly's/Hawkmoth's" name. Some names can be pronounced more than one way... I have no idea which names got multiple pronounciations in the episodes you're referencing, but it could be that... or a lack of clear, consistent direction from the voice over director... you never know...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aliana-chan In reply to Macbow333 [2018-05-04 01:22:22 +0000 UTC]

Yup, only that. x3 Papillon is called "Halálfej" (literal meaning: Death Skull) in the Hungarian dub. Which is an indirect reference to a certain butterfly called "Halálfejes szender" (I don't know its English name, that's why I give you the Latin one, so you can look it up: Acherontia atropos), which is actually witty if you ask me. I think the translators thought it sounded more intimidating than calling him "Pillangó" or "Lepke" (both mean 'butterfly' in Hungarian). xD

Tried to search for that episode, I managed to found it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEUyoE…
It is mainly Adrien's surname tho (and other surnames too...from time to time...and Gabriel's first name). xD One note before you watch it, or excerpts from it: we Hungarians bought the English version, so mostly they pronounce the names that way. Mostly...because there are episodes when ones are pronounced in the original French way. Here we have Adrien's voice actor pronouncing his and his dad's name in the English way....as for Marinette's, she is leaning towards the French pronunciation of the previously mentioned names, but nobody told the poor thing that the 'e' is supposed to be silent in the word 'Agreste',  so...xDDDD Because Hungarian people tend to pronounce every vowel in a word.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Macbow333 In reply to Aliana-chan [2018-05-04 23:01:56 +0000 UTC]

And it all comes full circle... It's English name is the death's-head hawkmoth. Here's some extra information about it if you haven't already done some reading up on it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death%27…

...so most of my comments on the episode will probably be due to a lack of understanding how Hungarian is actually spoken. If any of them come off as mean, that is not my intent.

Is it just me or did the Hungarian VAs for Alya, Adrien, and Nino sound more like adults than a teenagers at a few points throughout the episode as well?
Sounds Like no one told Simon Grimore's VA about not pronouncing the silent "e" in "Agreste" either... oh well, these little differences in language sometimes just slip through the cracks. It was interesting to notice, but since I've watched both the English and French verisons of some episodes, I've grown used to hearing the French and English pronunciations interchangeably.
When Marinette transforms, it's a little unclear, but I think I can pick out when she says Tikki. However, the last syllable she utters sounds more like she's in pain on the toilet than it sounds like she's about to have fun saving her idol in fashion and his teen model of a son.
I still can't get over the fact that Chat Noir thought dropping someone down an elevator shaft was an okay way to end a fight. Bulky as his bodyguard is, that fall still should've killed him, scientifically speaking, and Adrien should've known that considering he's a pro at physics... unless he's somehow aware that LB's "Miraculous Ladybug" can bring back the dead, while no one watching the episode when it first aired would've known (according to Thomas Astruc on Twitter, it can revive the dead as long as the death happened in relation to the fight with the akuma victim that caused any "damage" her spell is about to repair) ... except for the fact that we see Adrien's bodyguard later in the episode which really just makes me more confused the longer I think about how that fall didn't kill him. Unless there's some sort of safeguard enchantment on all Miraculous magic that prevents the primary consequences of their use to be death of the target...

Haha, really? Good to know. Hawk Moth means Szender (pronounced similarly like 'sender' ('send-ehr' actually) ) then in Hungarian...which doesn't sound very intimidating or villainous either, definitely not as much as Death's Head. xD I knew a few things about it, but thank you for linking it to me. It has two very archaic folk Hungarian names too: Death's Head witch and Wolf of Bees. But now I can't unimagine Gabriel chirping from irritation...

If your intention was to make me laugh like 5-10 minutes after reading your 'toilet remark' then you succeeded.

No, you are not the only one, they do sound more like young adults at some parts, and not just in this episode, but in the others too, obviously. Though I love Adrien's voice actor to death, despite his voice is a bit deep, he's doing an excellent job and keeping him in-character very well. I linked an episode (I cannot recall currently it was the one I linked to you or another...) to another foreign friend of mine (she is from the USA like you) and she told me that she really loved his Hungarian VA and preferred over the English one.
I'll be honest, 95% of the Hungarian VAs weren't told not to pronounce the silent "e" at the end of the word "Agreste". xDD Almost everyone says it the same way as Simon Grimore and Marinette (in the"Origins" episode though she pronounces the English way with the silent "e"). It doesn't really bug me, it rather makes me chuckle to hear it every time as "Ahg-rest-eh". xD At least in the first season, in 'The Collector' it was pronounced in the original French way.
Same here, except with the Hungarian and French versions, and sometimes the Spanish one, though the first two ones which I prefer. I had a guess that you were watching both versions, according to the way you use the original French names in your fanfiction. x3
Marinette says "Tikki, pöttyöket fel!" (which technically the same as "Tikki, spots on!" ). "Pötty" = "spot", pöttyök = spots (our plural suffix/sign is "k",while you have "s"), and by adding "et" (usually just "t") we signify it fulfills the object position in the phrase, so it becomes "pöttyöket", and "fel" = "on", because in Hungarian "felvenni valamit" = "putting something on". Hungarian is an agglutinating language, as we determine the roles of certain words in certain phrases by adding certain suffixes to them instead of using a bound word order, like in English. And Adrien says "Plagg, karmokat ki!" by the way.
Chat Noir does act like without thinking about the consequences quite frequently...Well, his bodyguard was under the spell of an akumatized, and they can handle a lot more than a normal human being, and since he whammy him, I guess he shared the magic which had made him strong and injury-proof. If he hadn't been possessed, I am sure he would have died during his fall.  That is my explanation which I was able to come up. The other one is 'cartoon logic'. Oh! I had a headcanon that she would be able to bring dead people back, seemingly I was right. It just makes me more determined to make little lion-lass causing severe damage in one of Papillon's puppets...Rawr rawr.

Thanks for the interesting trivia... and a snicker from the thought of Gabriel chirping angrily.

I am glad I could make you laugh too.

At least I am not the only one who hears them sound older than the characters actually are. I do have to agree that I like the non-English voices for Chat a little more than his English version. Thanks for the quick Hungarian lesson. In some ways it’s kind of like Latin with the suffixes providing the role of the word in the sentence. While some thrall are transformed into mummies or knights, I would not have assumed a hypnotic spell would have provided the same boost in their endurance... honestly though, I should just go with cartoon or even anime logic on this one. After all, ML is a mahou shoujo style show. Anyway, as long as you give her a valid reason to hurt someone like that instead of letting it come out of nowhere, I am positive you will make it into an excellent scene.

Welcome dear. I've read that in my book that even the caterpillar is able to produce this noise, not just the fully grown butterfly. A young annoyed Gabriel chirping, that is an image which we need.

Same here with Chat's voices. His singing voice in the Christmas special was actually more suitable according to age for him in the Hungarian version tho. Other than that, I still love his voice actor, he sounds so cute and funny.
Hungarian is considered a Finn-Ugric language, but you are right. The most known connection we have with Latin that it used to be taught as an obligatory second language until the middle of the 20th century in my country. But thanked to that ML episode, now you could hear how I sound.
Yup, it is. And the target audience mainly are children, and they won't watch a cartoon as critically as we adults do.
I highly doubt she would attack without a proper reason. Not even her animal aesthetic would do that. Lionesses are not like male zebras who sometimes go crazy and decide to live out their testosterone-fueled anger on other zebras by kicking the living crap out of them, and sadly those happen to foals mostly.
I have written at least a passage about that in my latest note which I sent to you that what makes her angry, and that she'd never do something without any reason. And also included that sadly lions are not really flexible...x3

Macbow333 In reply to Aliana-chan [2018-06-30 09:05:08 +0000 UTC]

It really is...

To be clear, I wasn't implying that Hungarian and Latin are related. I was just pointing out that both languages use suffixes to denote the use of words in a sentence.
Some might expect to see a zebra or two in Gabriel's mansion, considering all the black and white in that place, except the stripes wouldn't go with the checker board pattern on the floor... (slightly condescending remark about how poorly Gabriel treats his son from time to time)
It's good to know you have something in mind. I bet your readers will be captivated by the scene you create.
