Description Media: India ink, 0.4 micron

I’ve been in a bit of an experimental mood these days, and I wanted to do something different using ink this time around. As such, I decided to draw a more ceremonial Eli, hoping to match her formal robes to a more traditional art style.

I really love this piece, the way you shaded it with all the stippling, especially on her face, gives it a really unusual style that I find very appealing. It looks very classic and really lends itself well to the ceremonial outfit and pose.

Gorgeous work! I love all the experimental pieces you do! They always have so much style!

Also, nice job on the horse too, does Elihal's horse have a name?Β

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the style - I borrowed a bit from Beardsley, and added a bit of my own style as well, and I hope to develop this into a shiny new inking style I'll be able to deploy I'm glad you like the classical, formal vibe, too!

Experimenting is the only way we grow, and I'm happy you enjoy my attempts! It's always a delight to try out new things like this, especially when they work out rather well

Eli's horse is a young, fiery mare called Ingrid, after her eldest sister.

I think it's turning into an awesome hybrid style that I'm really enjoying! Especially in your new piece of Caleb too! Nice!

I feel like a lot of OC artists don't take a lot of risks when it comes to art styles, and usually stay within their comfort zone, but you're always out there trying new and crazy things and I really admire that! I might have to try experimenting with style a bit too Β

That's adorable! It's so cute that she named her horse after her sister! I'm not sure how my sister would react if I named a pet after her though lol Does she have a lot of sisters? And did she take Ingrid (the horse) with her from her home when she left to join the army? I'm very interested in how that particularly journey turned out, running away in the middle of the night maybe? Probably terrified of getting caught, because she wouldn't get another chance. I wonder if she told her sister she was leaving or just vanished! Β

That's the thing about OCT, it's awesome and you get to learn so much about characters, but then there are still so many aspects and elements you're left with tons of questions about!

Thank you for your kind words!

Taking risks is always scary (esp. when they're irreversible, like with traditional art), and whenever I try something new, I tend to be crying internally most of the time, too. I do like trying out new things when it comes to art, however difficult the process something is, and I'm happy to inspire you on this matter! Although practice is key, it's no good to remain in The Comfort Zone forever - and it's always fun to get the images in your head on paper using newer, better methods than before.

Glad you like this tidbit of information too! It helps that horses are sacred to Eli's family - if she'd named a dog, or a cat (or worse, a goose) after her sister, she'd probably get chased around the estate by her sibling for sure. Elihal has got two older sisters (Ingrid and Vainna) and one younger brother (Ronni); she took Ingrid The Horse with her when she left her home estate. Her 'escape' into the Army went pretty smooth actually: a friend of her family, the captain Brandon Ryansson () came for a visit (trying to marry off his son to Ingrid The Human), and Elihal begged him to let her come with him to join the military. In order to persuade him of her value to the Army, she organised and won a horseback archery competition; Brandon was easily won over, and took her with him when he returned to HQ. Although her parents are none too happy with her choice, she still writes letters to her family (in spite of her troublesome dyslexia). Aka: no escapades, sadly.

Exactly! The OC-T merely shapes the foundation for characters, and builds a base image - it's a nice way to start (introducing or) writing a character, and makes one realise how much further one has to go!

This looks amazing, I absolutely love the style on the inking and the way the composition is balanced on the whole! The hatching looks so neat, the horse turned out really well (although they are really difficult to draw, as least for me) and Elihal is gorgeous! I must say that your ink pieces are my favourite from your gallery and it's awesome to see you experiment with techniques in this medium! <3

Thank you! Ever since I did the Beardsley-based piece, I've been wanting to experiment with inks a little more, so I'm glad you enjoy the experimental style I'm currently trying out. Drawing horses is not my strongest suit you should hear me swear when sketching them, so I feel your pain for sure. XDΒ

Incidentally, I also love the pictures you do with ink (), and I must admit that your crosshatching very much is an inspiration to me as I try new things with ink - thank you!

Again, thank you so very much!Β  Β Your kind words on this piece still mean a lot to me.Β

Horses are difficult to draw for sure, but considering Eli's affinity for them I have no choice but to give them my best shot. I had a blast drawing her too, that's for sure!

I love how you did the inking style here. It looks like a print or a classical illustration! Will you do a coloured version of this?

Thank you so very much! I'm delighted to hear you think it looks like a print! (I've been thinking of opening up commissions during the summertime, but still am not sure )Β

Also, thank you for inspiring me to make a coloured version! Currently I'm experimenting with markers using a copy of this piece, so maybe - if it works out - I'll post a coloured version soon indeed. Β

This is really nice! I love the way you did the inking style here, especially on her hair and the shading on the horse - it creates such an interesting rough effect. A really nice style!Β

Thank you so very much for your kindness! This inking style definitely is a lot of fun - to me, it's still a little difficult, but it definitely lends itself for new opportunities for shading using inks, so that's definitely fun! ^^
