2 Sphinx guard the door to Eulalia the sage. Each of these Sphinx are likely blind but they again likely to have a "Riddle"(of whole universe) floating between them. Any creature stumble between them will stuck until solve the riddle(of whole universe) sometime they might let someone pass like the protagonist of this book does.

Oh! I always imagined them as actual Sphinxes (body of a lion, head of a human). But that's an interesting association you made there
