Is this just an exercise or was it drawn from observation?

It was an exercise. I wish that we had architecture like that around here in the US to observe. It was a result of studying Gothic architecture a lot when taking an art history course at a community college, and then being told to create work for my perspective class at ACCD. I drew what I knew.

I though you might have been out and about in Europe... Really convincing image... Great stuff.

ah, I wish. I had been to Europe a few years before making that (back in highschool) and went again slightly after, but I have yet to take a trip out there with the free time to sit around drawing. Going with family or a group I was always stuck being dragged along by impatient ignorant cretins who would rather rush to see the next thing rather than sit and enjoy the sight in front of them.

Very nice technical drawing. I think I could pull something like this off, but I lack the patience to meticulously repeat every arch, column, and doorway.

Don't forget each brick; its fuzzy cuz I didn't have a scanner back then, but the dark areas are detailed brick by brick. Now-a-days I doubt I'd have the patience any more either.

Now that's just astonishing....not just because of the way it looks, but because of the amount of work involved....not everyone can use perspective so well....i should know they ask a lot of this things at school <.< and they are hard at times haha
Takes a while to understand perspective....or at least it took some time for me.

You can, but it takes more than wishing. If you really want to draw like this the main trick is to understand perspective and put it into use. You can find books about drawing in perspective, and I know good ones are out there though I can't think of any off the top of my head. I myself learned perspective in a class at my college; if you can find a college class that teaches drawing in perspective then go for it.
There is very little freehand work in this as most of the time I was using a straight edge. So it did not take a whole lot of artistic skills. In fact, after you know what you want to view in the picture and the view you want of it then it is time to just go to work. The more detail you want and the cleaner you want it the more work it is.

The sketch is awesome. You have a wonderful eye for detail, but the image is so big! You might scale down just a tad in the future.
