Description Unknown- "For they say that when a Cocke groweth old, he layeth a certaine egge without any shell, instead whereof it is covered with a very thicke skinne, which is able to withstand the greatest force of an easie blow or fall. They saye, moreover, that this egge is layd onely in the Summer time, about the beginning of the Dogge-dayes (between early July and early September) , being not so long as a Hens Egge, but round and orbiculer:...sometimes of a yellowish muddy color... and afterward sat upon by a Snake or Toad, bringeth forth the Cockatrice, being halfe a yarde in length, the hinder part like a snake, the former part like a Cocke, because of a treble comb on his forehead."

Supposedly there was a cockatrice found in the vault of a chapel dedicated to Saint Lucea during the time of Pope Leo the Fourth (847 to 855.)  The breath of this cockatrice fouled the air, and caused many deaths in Rome.

Very nicely done "classic" version, I like the color. It will also do as a Basilisk at a pinch, since the two got hopelessly compounded by the 13th century.

You don't know how happy this makes me. EPIC WIN on the picture.

That's a really nice version of a cockatrice ^_^. I love all the colors you used, and the way he's got a foot over teh skull is an especially nice touch. I also really like how spindly some of the plumage is. He looks nice 'n' menacing. *faves*

Woah cool work!
I allways tought that the name "cockatrice" was just made up by fantasy games to make a diffirence between flying and not flying basilisks, but now I know it's not I feel enriched by mythological/folklorical knowledge.. thanks for clearing that up for me!
Keep up the great work

(P.s., you have to excuse me.. I'm a mythology addict)

Hell yes. Honestly this has to be the best depiction of a cockatrice I have ever seen. I love how you've managed to give the rather ancient, nasty-smelling, twisted and unkempt look rather than overglorify it as I so often see done. And I simply do not know how you managed such perfect watercolor look in Photoshop.

Look at his face! Was it not the Cockatrice who turned people to stone when he looked into their eyes? There were a few animals who did this, actually...

wow, the details! on the wings! the scaely feet! and that face...*shudders* He's magnificent, a feast for the eyes--as long as he doesn't look into mine!

Mmm... so much better than the usual depiction of a cranky-looking rooster. Such gorgeous colors, too! I love the touches of blue in the bronze back-feathers, and the yellow eyes.

The feathering is VERY nicely done... how long did this image take you, out of curiousity?

I can't believe I didn't notice the skull in the ink version XD

sheesh... I have nothing but good things to say about this picture... Well, the only other thing I can think of'd be a bg <--wow, I'm so creative

Thanks

The drawing was done really quickly. Something like an hour or so. The painting of it was completed over one weekend. I'm guessing it took about twenty hours from start to finish.

You've strong drawing skills. The colors are beautiful. I think you can push the values some more. It looks a bit flat now. Some dark shades in the appropriate areas can do wonders in enhancing it's volume.

Beautiful colours...I really like how you've done the feathers...it's like Joseph's multicouloured dream coat. Though this looks highly believable, birds are normally colourful. It's all wonderfully painted shaded and blended. I also like the scaly tale and claws and I especially like the eye, bright and golden in aspect.
I also like your description on the origin of this foul fowl

Superb job.
