A LOT of patience xD
The secret is to zoom in really close and play around with the tools alot, you won't be amazing to start of with, but improvement shows when you stick with it.
And most pixels look best with a load of shading/sparkles

Haha, well zooming in really close is always a good thing to do(;
And then just zoom out every now and then to make sure it looks okay- certain things look better at certain distances, you know? xD
