Nice Picture. You have some extreme nice "shallow depth of field"(blurring around the face) in this shot. Is it optical? or just retouched with computer software?

"If" its retouched, then i would like to know how you do it. I have a bit of a problem faking it with software like PS. I would really apriciate any hints or help Keep up the good work

This is all real. I shot it with a cheap strobe and an umbrella and the lens was a 75mm at f1.4. Wide open, the d.o.f. is around ten millimeters at closest focus (which this was). It there's a way to do this in the computer, I don't know about it. Most of what I have seen is a subject in sharp focus with some significant distance to a background which is in extreme de-focus, and it usually looks totally composited and fake. I guess there are people who think they can simulate the progression of blur that is contained all on one object (like a face or head), but it's probably easier to just get it in the camera. Fast 50mm lenses are cheap for film SLRs, and wouldn't be much different in the end result than this.

hm.. Wish i was able to get the kind of shallow dof you get. Dont have the equipment for it. Could you review this images Shallow d.o.f . Is fake the first thing that comes to your mind??. Its ofcourse seposed to look a bit dreamy and not that realistc. But does the dof look very badly composited. Or does it give the fealing a image with shallow dof is seposed to?

Here is the deviation anyway: [link]

There are some stuff around the edges that reminds a bit of chromatic abberation, its the technique i use that causes this, its just that, this way is faster(im just a bit lazy ) So just ignore it. Anyway, what do you think of the faking, is it worth it, or should i try more. Or just buy the optical equipment to try to achive something useful and "real"

i adore it. he looks expectant of something...for some reason. either that or he looks like he just got done with a bath(the hair appears wet) and has the 'needs towel to get warm' look in his eye. (seen the look a bit...babysitter ) he just looks so innocent. whatever it may be...wonderful photo. it's a favorite. ^_^

He is pretty great. He really thinks about things that most people - let alone most nine year olds - don't think about. He also reads more than I do, and I read way more than most people.

He's adorable. He does look really serious in this photo, either that or he's mad and giving you an evil look. But whatever the case this is a fanstastic picture.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

matttttt In reply to jessiebessie620 [2005-08-16 19:49:21 +0000 UTC]

He's not really mad. Whenever we go to the trouble to take pictures for the sake of taking pictures, I get him to do this kind of stuff. For every dozen or so of these, there are a couple where he is acting like an idiot.

Very handsome young man with a very pensive gaze...looks like there is alot going on behind those eyes.

And Happy Birthday to him...

Yeah, he's been that way since birth. He was never one of those mouth-breathing droolers. Pensive is a good word.

haha...boooys!!

he's really pretty...take his pic...in about 15 years..

(okay, now I'm just stupid...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

matttttt In reply to Penzram [2005-08-17 01:51:54 +0000 UTC]

He is such a total boy, too. Not that his mom and I tried to make him all masculine or whatever, but he just turned out that way. I think us males are genetically predisposed to certain behaviors, maybe.

No, you're not stupid. He is really cute. And I'm sure that I will be taking pictures of him for a long, long time. Should be interesting to see what happens in the next fifteen years.

Thanks. He's not evil, but he told me that his new nickname is "Little Morbid Marley". He is pretty serious sometimes though.
