Description A mostly speculative drawing of the South American dromaeosaur Unenlagia, based mainly on its relative Buitreraptor. I threw some grass in there, since it was recently discovered that the stuff did grow during the Mesozoic, at least in some perts of the southern hemisphere.

Thanks! I think most people make dinosaurs look too "alien." They're just big reptiles and/or birds... It's the Cambrian critters that should look alien

Makes a lot of sense, Speaking of Gondwana, I recently wrote my paper on Gondwanan noasaurids, and so on, some of the pics can be seen in my invincible gallery of dinosaur-y-ness.

But, yes, I also believe using Buitreraptor's snout on Unenlagia was a good idea. Makes a lot of sense.

This is the birdiest Unenlagia I've seen so far! excellent job.

Thanks! I kinda have a crush on the idea that at least the gondwanan dromaeosaurs evolved from flying ancestors similar to Rahonavis, so they get an extra helping of birdiness, seeing as how they wouldn't have had so much time to lose their flight-related features. I view unenlagiines almost like the Cretaceous equivelent of kakapo, rather than kiwi or moa as the northern dromies probably were.

I prefer to compare it with the weka; the northern dromeosaurs look more like phorusrhacids.

As a whole, I too find interesting of possibility of secondarily flightless maniraptors appealing. For instance, early troodontids resembled so much Archeopteryx that they were once thought to part of its family, while oviraptors are similar to early birds like Sapeornis
