What can I say about this picture. The colours are bright and eye-catching and the Bros are about to be attacked by Bowser's minions. It's just another day in the Mushroom Kingdom! 
If there's one thing that I like about this drawing, though, is that despite the cheerful setting, the designs for Mario and Luigi themselves seem slightly grittier, their expressions being more serious than usual. If Nintendo were to make an edgier, darker game, I would go for your approach: a more somber tone behind the happiness.
